Lewis's Story

I went to the public schools in Erie from the first grade through the tenth. Erie had an extremely good school system in the 30’s and 40’s, but by the time I started school the system had started to deteriorate. As the mining industry collapsed so did the school system. The children were being cheated out of a good education. It seemed that good students, with the help of dedicated parents, got along, but still were lacking the education they needed to pursue higher studies. Few succeeded in going on to colleges and universities, but a very few. I grew up in the Erie Telephone Office. My mother was the telephone exchange manager. The Erie telephone office was closed in 1955. The old magneto “Number Please” phone system had been replaced with dial. My mother was transferred to Broomfield, Colorado to manage the telephone office until it also went dial. Living in Broomfield, I had several choices of high school to attend, Thornton, Arvada, Louisville and Lafayette. The three counties, Adams, Jefferson and Boulder all meet at Broomfield. The football coach at Lafayette (Tom Sutak) was the most persuasive. Tom had knowledge of my football experience at Erie. Lafayette was known for exceptional football and Tom was one of Colorado’s premier coaches, (Later he would be selected to Colorado’s Hall of Fame.) Lafayette was a good choice for me when it came to school studies. I had to learn how to study and was expected to have passing grades, nothing at all like Erie. School was hard for me coming from Erie poor schools. We had extraordinary football teams the years I was in Lafayette. In fact, my senior year we were in the state play-offs. After football season I became a wrestler. Wrestling was an entirely new sport for me. I did well both years attending Lafayette High School. Both years I wrestled, I was conference champ. at time, it did not matter what size of school you were from, all high schools were combine, the small and largest schools competed at the same level. Because of my wrestling I was granted a student scholarship to Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. After college I was drafted into the Army, later I reenlisted. I spent 18 months with the US Army Special Forces in Vietnam. I was a sergeant in a reconnaissance group on the Laotian, Cambodian border. After the military, I started working in the food service industry. My first employment was with Nobel, Inc., (later to become Sysco) in Denver. I married a California lady and we had three children over the next several years. During these years I transferred to Sysco Food Services as a Corporate Director in Houston, Texas. (Sysco is the nation’s largest food service company, a Fortune 500 firm.) My responsibilities were in the transportation department and included constant travel. In 1978 I was relocated back to Denver. After Sysco (1992) I started a new career in the grocery business. This employment was with Core/Mark International, a San Francisco Corporation. My first assignment was in Corona, California. The position was the Operations Manager for the company’s largest facility. In 1996, I was selected and honored as, “Manager of The Year.” Later I was transferred to Phoenix, Arizona to open a new warehouse facility. After Phoenix, I once again became a Corporate Director and traveled to all the company facilities, from the west coast to the east coast. I retired in 2004 after having close to 40 years in the food industry. In 2002, I moved to Orange, California. Recently, I returned to Broomfield, Colorado my old home area. Well, today there is very little similarities of what one would remember as home. As age creeps upon us, our past is lost in growth and physical changes.
