Lincoln's Story
Life
After leaving Fenway house in '84, have lived in various places around Boston.. Have been a bit of a crazed hobbyist with various types of model planes. Did very well on contest circuit in '89, which inspired me somehow to return to MIT and finish.
No kids. Married. Living in Waltham.
College
MIT was a shock. No more coasting, and if I spaced out in a lecture I'd be lost. Lots of interesting people in a difficult atmosphere. Managed to graduate eventually with a joint major in writing and ocean engineering. They classify it in the humanities department but that's debatable. On the other hand, I did write a poetry thesis. (A bunch of poems and an essay.)I discovered Richard Hugo, Galway Kinnell, Thom Gunn, Phil Levine and a bunch of others. However, I tend to work and often think as an engineer. I did indeed study an awful lot of engineering/technical subjects, a lot of them related to the small ocean engineering department. Made a few really good friends that I still see. Bent my perspective even more than it already was. Still have a love/hate relationship with the place, tho I don't dream abou...Expand for more
t uncompleted problem sets or falling behind in my coursework anymore.
Lived for 8 years in a crazy place associated with MIT called Fenway House with some other people who also wanted to be hippies when they grew up.
Workplace
Have gravitated into mechanical design engineering. Most recent really good job was at a telecom startup designing enclosures for power hungry, high speed, electronically noisy electronics, but I've worked on a whole bunch of other stuff, like a giant bagel cooker and oceanographic buoys. You can guess what happened to the telecom job in 2001. I'm very good at visualizing things in 3D and figuring out simple ways to do things. I'm still wicked (that's the kind of thing you say when you've lived in Massachusetts half your life) smart but I don't interrupt the higher ups anymore the way I used to do in class.
UPDATE: back in telecom satisfactorily
another update: no longer between layoffs, though the second telecom job wasn't bad while it lasted
yet another update: working on manufacturing tooling for health care stuff
another update: currently looking for mechanical design work
