Linda's Story

I was Linda Bangert when I went to Liberty schools for 12 years. I will start after that. I worked until I married Mike Hoaglin in 1973. I had just turned 21. He had been a Marine when we started dating, and less than a year after the wedding he decided to join the Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson and I managed an apartment complex in Colorado Springs. I had just found out Terry Lefringhouse was stationed there, when he had his fatal accident. My first and only child was born there and then it was off to Germany for 3 years and then to Ft. Benning and we lived in Columbus, GA. After 2 tours with the Army, Mike had decided he did not like the "new Army". We returned to Quincy and lived there 5 years. I would constantly run into people I knew, but Mike didn't. Mike had been raised in Columbia, MO and felt it was "home", so to Columbia we went. Then the tides turned. Mike knew everyone but I didn't!! Since Amber, our daughter, was still in elementary school, I decided to start an in-home daycare so I was with her before and after school. When she was older, I was supervisor then manager at a company where mailings were proccessed. Mike was a master electrican and started Hoaglin Electric. Before I knew it I was keeping the books and pitch-hitting as a go-fer if an electrican didn't show up. I finally said teach me something and you guys can fetch your own material! I started wiring plugs, GFI's, doorbells, fire alarms, cable, phones, recessed lighting, etc. I never learned trimming out switches, the panel or ceiling fans. Mike had a back injury and after 20 years we got out of the business. I also put in over 15 years as a switchboard operator and front desk receptionist at a rehabilitation hospital. When I was needed I would take a vacation day at work. Mike had had several major surgeries in one year and was being treated for pneumonia, which was actually cancer. He was on his third round of chemo when he went to heaven as he had a severe cocci infection in his lungs. We were told he had 3 to 6 ...Expand for more
months without chemo but up to 2 years if he took chemo. He got 3 months, and I am still in shock after 2 years. We had been married 40 years and it wasn't nearly long enough. Over the years we had numerous Harley Davidsons. I sold his HD trike a few weeks ago which he owned about 6 weeks. He was going with a group of friends to California, so we sold the Ultra Classic and bought the trike due to his health. Instead of the trip he went to the hospital never to come home again. I'm semi-retired now, enjoy my grandkids, Kaya and Leo. I volunteer for all field trips at 3 year old Leo's daycare and now get hugs from at least 4 little kids when I walk in! :) When a little boy says, "Me-Me I love you" several times during a field trip, it makes you glad you agreed to go when he asked you. My next adventure will be going on an outing to fish with 9 year old Kaya's class. My hobbies over the years were many HD functions, re-doing my deceased brother's (Bobby) 1966 Galaxie 500 convertible (which I sold several months ago), reading, gardening and I like to go play the slot machines. I also like to look for deals for my grandkids so I go bargain hunting. I have NEVER liked garage sales but I don't mind the online auctions. After 36 years of having a HD in the garage, and now I don't, I still go to the benefits a HD charitable biker group holds for very ill children. I was so impressed with the group I try to never miss one. One was for a boy with leukemia, another was for a baby girl born with a bad heart and the last one I went to was for a 10 year old boy with brain cancer. The next benefit is already marked on my calender! This group works so hard and do so much, it warms your heart. Currently I spend way too much time on the computer. I had an accident and spent 17 days in the hospital less than 2 years ago. I took rehab also to get back on my feet. So I need to find some type of employment and be back on a schedule again, be more organized, etc. Would love to hear from any of my old school mates. .
