Linda's Story
Life
I am very blessed with my family. I am happy and married to the same person for about a million years. We are well matched and appreciate each other very much.
We have two children who attend college (also for about a million years). My daughter will graduate this year in Marine Biology. My son has a 2-year degree in Information Systems and will attend nursing school next year. If they EVER finish school, we will return to traveling the United States. Until then, all fun money goes to the EDUCATION fund.
Our dogs and cat have passed away. We have one cat from the shelter because my husband indulged my request although we really don't need one. Does anyone ever really "need" a cat?
My best friend and co-worker who is also my walking partner and gym-buddy. We keep each other exercising almost daily. I love snow-skiing, but have not gone in several winters. Perhaps, I'm scared that I am too old and might get hurt? I now settle for gardening, reading, sewing/needlework and such. It is safer and much less expensive.
I collect antique dolls and enjoy researching their history. Nostalgia and historic places interest me greatly. My grandmother's photos and dishes are now treasures to me, yet when I was young I nearly unloaded them at the Goodwill. My husband would not hear of it and now I can't imagine what what going through my head. It is true; youth is wasted on the young.
Like everyone, we have had our burdens: My husband remains in remission (19 years) from lymphoma and a bone-marrow transplant. We highly recommend City of Hope to anyone faced with cancer/blood disorders. I, too am fully recovered from a less severe cancer. We now consider ourselves in excellent health with no limitations. My daily prayers are thanks for our health and our family.
School
I have fond memories of my high school years and friendships of that time. Many memories are forever linked to the music of that time. I cannot hear certain old songs without thinking of persons and places of long ago. Whenever I hear "Walk Away Renee," I think of a girl named Renee who died from a brain tumor circa 1968. Whenever I hear "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" or "House of the Rising Sun," I think of a high school boyfriend who taught me to play them on guitar. Whenever I hear "How Can I Be Sure?" I think of driving around town with girlfriends. When I hear "Magic Carpet Ride" I think of the high school dances. When I hear "Daydream Believer" I think of cheerleader practice. ty of Redlands without getting a lump in my throat and thoughts of competitions in the quad during yearly cheerleader camp. Although memories of the past are not thought of frequently, they still hold a place dear to my heart.
I remember a poignant quote (Winston Churchill) in one of the school yearbooks that I have never forgotten: "It is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning." My goodness, the beginning is so long gone, but still tugs at my heart and takes me back.
I remain in touch with several high school girlfriends that I seem to appreciate more and more with the passage of time: Patrice, Lenita, Theresa and Paige. It was only yesterday that activities with each of you filled my days. I am thankful to remain friends with you now. I hope to maintain these friendships always.
I attended the 10, 15, 20 and 30-year reunions. The 20-year brought the biggest crowd and was probably the most fun. Yet the 30-year was the most "real" reunion. Everyone was genuine and no longer pretentious or trying to impress. The setting was casual and warm because it was held at the home of one of the class members. I missed the 35-year. Hopefully, will attend the 40-year.
College
College was obligatory and not especially memorable. I finished with only a 2-year degree and studied general education and Spanish. I speak Spanish almost daily at work (with non-English speaking parents at the school district), but it is extremely limited and unpolished.
Workplace
I have been a secretary in Health Services at my local school district for many many years now. I have the most enviable job in the district because I work with all the school nurses.
I am happy, cheerful and fun-loving at work that has resulted with my co-workers calling me Pollyanna. This year, I was chosen employee of the year for my district.
Update: Summer 2008: My daughter graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Cal State Long Beach in May 2008. She is working while searching for her dream job in her field. One down and one to go!
My son started Nursing School in January 2009. He will be a registered nurse with his degree in one more year. We are getting there!
God is good; even when life isn't.
Update April 2011: My son graduated from nursing school and is a nurse in a Critical Care Unit of a local hospital. My daughter lives and works full-time in San Diego. Both are going back to school later this year to begin their graduate degrees.
