Linda's Story

I was born in Wyandotte, MI and shortly after my dad rejoined the AF and we relocated to Colorado Springs, CO. We lived there for 3 years. He was reassigned to Fuchu AB, Japan in 1960. When we first got there we stayed at Green Park and then moved into a little house on the economy. All I remember about it was it had doors with rice paper and we weren't allowed to play with them and how it shook when a earthquake would hit. After a year or so we moved to Grant Heights and stayed here until our return to the US in Feb 1963. We were assigned to Lowry AFB, CO and that's where we ended up staying. I went to Aurora Schools and graduated from Central in 1973. Shortly after I enlisted in the Air Force and went to Lackland for Christmas and New Years and spent almost the next year in Tech School for Ground Radio Maintenance. Finished up at Keesler in Oct and went to my first duty station right up the road at Columbus AFB,MS. Here I met and married my first husband, Sgt Richard Wilkerson. In 1975 we relocated to San Vito AS, Italy where our daughter Tonia was born. From there we went to Shaw AFB, where we gained another little one, Brian. We were there for 2 1/2 years and then I got an assignment to RAF Fairford. My...Expand for more
dad laughed when he heard where we were going as he had been stationed at RAF Brize Norton and knew that it hadn't been used in years. I must say it was interesting bringing a base back from caretaker status, wouldn't care to do it again. Had our second son, Tim while we were there also. From there we went to Ellsworth AFB,SD. We were there 4 years when Richard got a remote assignment to Osan AB, Korea. Was there for 18 months and then took a COT to Kwang Ju. Shortly after arriving at Kwang Ju he died of a massive heart attack on 6 Jun 1988. I took a humanitarian assignment to Hanscom AFB, where I met my current husband Michael. I got out of the AF in 1991 and we moved to Albuquerque, where first daughter was born the next year. After working at varied jobs, we both were hired by Sandia National Labs. It's been a interesting ride. Some of it I wouldn't care to relive, but have been to some interesting places and met alot of really good people along the way. I try to keep in touch with some of them. Mike and I will celebrate our 20th anniverary (Wwhere has the time gone!!!) and my granddaugher's first birthday on the 12th of May and My youngest son Tim and his fiancee Jenn will tie the knot in November.
