Linda's Story

I was born in Los Angeles and spent the first five years of my life in El Monte. I had two older brothers who died when they were young children, and two younger brothers in their 60s. My family moved to Sunland in 1955. I attended Wright School in El Monte for kindergarten, Stonehurst School for first grade, then Our Lady of Lourdes School in Tujunga from 2nd through the 6th grade. I was so shy that my parents sent me to Mt. Gleason for junior high to bring me out of my shell. I earned good grades in public school, but by the time I got to Verdugo, boys were a big distraction, so my parents sent me to all-girls Villa Cabrini in the middle of 11th grade. As a result, I have two sets of dear high school friends. After graduation from VCA, I attended SFVSC for a year while working part-time for Kinney Shoes and an Alfa Romeo specialist. I was as a secretary/stenographer for Lockheed/Burbank from 1968 until 1970. I started working for the L.A. Department of Water & Power in 1970 and eloped to Las Vegas with my first husband, Neil, in 1972. I completed my A.A. degree in business/ accounting at Glendale College. After the birth of the first of our three sons, I chose the best job of all -- at-home mom -- and I loved it. We bought a house in Huntington Beach in 1973, but sadly, after 16 years, the marriage fell apart. We sold the house and I went to work for McDonnell Douglas/Boeing. A few years later, I met a handsome widower, Joe, who married me in 1989 and accepted my three ...Expand for more
boys as his own (he already had two grown sons). We've been married 26 years. All five sons have college degrees and are married to delightful ladies. We have eight grandchildren (5 boys and 3 girls), we live in Fountain Valley, CA, enjoying our "empty nest." My ex, Neil, married a remarkable young woman whom I consider a dear friend, and they have a beautiful 25-year-old daughter, who considers me her other mom. She married a wonderful young man in 2015. Sadly, Neil passed away in March 2009 after battling esophageal cancer for 3-1/2 years. We all miss him. My husband, Joe, enjoys building and flying model airplanes, working in the garden, and tinkering with his 1961 TR-3 Triumph convertible. I go to step aerobics, strength, and yoga classes four times a week, visit the grandkids every chance I get, and sing with the choir at our local Catholic church. In 2010, I visited Germany, Switzerland, and Italy with the choir. The highlight of the trip was seeing the Passion Play in Oberammergau. In 2013 our choir sang at the Vatican at a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. In 2015 I went on a 6-day horseback ride in the Canadian Rockies, and in 2017 I hope to join a pilgrimage to eastern Europe. I am also involved with the Villa Cabrini alumnae. My mom is 97 and lives in an Alzheimer's care facility nearby. Joe and I help manage her large rental property in Yucaipa. I love hearing from my friends, so write and let me know what you've been up to. Hugs, Linda (Grant) Jones
