Linda's Story
Currently living in Canyon Country, California.
After graduation, I worked in Johnstown for an auto parts dealer. In 1965, I went to Cambria-Rowe Business College, took the Medical-Secretary course and graduated in June 1966. A long and winding road took me to Washington, D.C., in February 1972 when I went to work for the FBI and, in 1976, the Department of Justice.
In 1978, I moved to Monterey, California, where it is very expensive. I worked for a small law firm there but in 1981 it got to be too expensive to live there so I moved to Tarzana, California, then to Reseda and finally to Canyon Country, with one diversion.
During all that time I worked for several different places, law firms and for Lockheed Corporation. In 1991, the company I was working for downsized and I pounded the pavement for a job, which I found at Packard Bell in Canoga Park. By that time, I was living in Canyon Country. The Northridge Earthquake hit in 1994 and Packard Bell relocated to Westlake Village - 100 miles round trip from my home. I stayed with them for another 2 1/2 years. Then we decided to go back to Monterey. My old job was available and I jumped on it. I moved back and stayed until January 2000. My father had passed away and I was needed at home, so back I came. Been here ever since.
But, in the meantime (again), I floundered for a job and found one at a GEICO in-house/staff counsel office in Woodland Hills. Things were going great - although the stress level was tremendous, it was a job that paid well and had great benefits. There...Expand for more
were 2 attorneys and 2 secretaries. In May 2007 my boss left to better himself (it's a LONG story). The powers that be would not let the managing attorney hire a replacement and I knew my days would be numbered. They were. So in September I was let go. Luckily I found a job immediately and started on September 11. That ended in March 2008 when they hired a permanent replacement and I have been unemployed ever since.
So anyway . . . in November 2008 I took early retirement although I'm still trying to find something part time. It's difficult with an unemployment rate of 10.1%. But I keep looking.
Personally, never married. Have had a variety of pets - parakeets (2), dogs (2), all of them greatly missed. Now 2 stray cats have adopted us. We tried to find other homes for them but no one wanted them and they have been here for 3 years now so I guess they are ours! We named them (get ready) William and Harry!
When I refer to "we" I'm meaning my mother. She is going to be 92 in June. We do a lot of knitting for the Veteran's Hospital, animal shelter, and gifts for family and friends.
Since school I have become more interested in history - go figure! I follow politics but not religiously, just want to make sure I know what's happening in case there's a quiz later. ;)
I'm sure I missed a lot of things but that gets you to where I am now - in Canyon Country where in the winter it can get down to 0 and in the summer it can get up to 120! Looking forward to moving away from here some day. Maybe back to Pennsylvania. Who knows.
