Linda's Story
Life
Married to a Viet Nam vet, Tom Als (Class of '64 Hampton) that I'd met on my 18th Birthday. We have a daughter Lori (41)who is married and has a14yr. old son Anthony (the light of our lives!); she's in sales here in Mason City. Our son, Scott, (38) is married and a chemist as is his wife and works and lives in Ames. They have a son, Quinten who is 2 and keeps us all on our toes! I would love to hear from any of you that I took classes with: I'm now in contact with 3 other classmates online and meeting monthy with 4 others for an evening meal. The online meets are thanks to Classmates.com. Following graduation, I went to Des Moines and attended a 3 yr. nurses training program afiliated with Drake University. When I returned to Mason City, I began work at Mercy Hospital;first as a Nurse Manager on a surgical floor and then an RN in the Intensive Care Nursery; loved it except for the politics! I have gotten in touch with 4 classmates and we now email regularly. I can't believe how time has passed so quickly..gosh, we're old now!

s. academic years. Following graduation in May, '69, I began working at the then St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (now Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa) in Mason City.
College
I attended 3 full years of nurses training at Broadlawns Polk County School of Nursing in Des Moines. It was affiliated with Drake University where our academic courses were taken. I quickly found out after spending time for a psych rotation in Independence for 2 mos. that that would not be the direction of nursing for me! I chose to return back to Mason City as I was engaged by then. This year (2014) I'll have been married 45 years!
Workplace
I began my job as a staff nurse on a Urology/Medical floor and 1 year later was named the Nurse Manager of the floor. I was responsible for the implementation of many policies and procedures. I worked the 7-3 shift. I went part-time after the birth of my daughter in '73 for 1 1/2 yrs. I changed shifts (11-7) and went to full time in the Nursery/NICU and loved it! In '91, I returned to the 7-3 shift after 16 years on nights. They recently changed us to 12 hr shifts; I was on the 7A-7P shift. Loved working in the NICU with all the challenges it presented and I enjoyed watching the critically ill babies go home with parents I'd gotten to know during the baby's stay. I retired from Mercy in November, 2013.
