Lisa's Story

Life Walter and I just celebrated 20 years of marriage August 6th. Wow! To celebrate we spent a week in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, at a Sandals Resort! Wow, what a way to celebrate 20 years! Walter surprised me with a dream I've had for over 20 years - that he would dance with me under the stars. He did it ~ on the shore of the ocean, by candle light. What a man! We have 3 children - Landon is 22, Logan is 18, and Lauren is 15. They are each very bright and intelligent with very strong personalities. Hummm...wonder who they got that from? !!! Landon lives on his own in an apartment in Arlington and is going to Lincoln Tech to learn welding and will graduate with his certification in November of 2009. Logan is a senior in high school and is the percussion leader in the band. He and a friend have a digital DVD film making business and have won some awards. He plays on the Tennis Team and his goal is to make it to Texas State Tennis Finals. He also plays on the golf team - which he worked to get started this year at his high school. Logan is the comedian in our family and is quick witted with comebacks that keep us cracked up! Lauren is a freshman in high school this year, plays the flute in the band and is a 1st year majorette. She looks like Walter's family, but her personalilty is so much like I was at her age. She is a social butterfly, can make friends with a total stranger in minutes and makes a lasting impression on everyone she meets. Walter's getting a big stick to beat off the older high school guys that are coming around! The Bible says, "children are a blessing from the Lord" and Walter and I have been blessed to have three children. We have learned a lot as parents, especially when they hit the teenage years! And we've learned that not matter how old your kids are and even after they have left your house, they still need a bit of parental advice (or direction) and financial assistance from time to time. Walter says he's looking forward to the empty nest, but I don't think I'm quite as eager for that time to come. We stay really busy in the small town of DeKalb, Texas. Our lives revolve around the activities at First Baptist Church where Walter is the Pastor. We've been here for eight years now. With two of our kids still at home and very active in the high school band, we spend the entire Fall traveling to all the football games. We are either at church events or doing something with our kids. It's great to have teenagers whose friends think Walter and I are the "coolest parents" and so they spend a lot of time at our home...Expand for more
. We know what our kids are doing when they are in our home with their friends and our doors are always open for teenagers to come here. I think we stay young at heart with so many teenagers around all the time. I love working in the yard, and planting stuff. Spring is my favorite season! The redbud and dogwood trees are blooming in my yard. I know the azaleas and mums will be blooming next. What a glorious time of year when everything is beginning to show new life! I really miss Big Sam and have great memories of my years there. I do stay in touch with Pam & Paula Bryant, Terri Schaefer, and Chris Beckham. I miss Cindy Neinast and Gerald Merchen and their loss reminds me how very precious each day of life is. We are not promised tomorrow so make the most of each moment you have with the ones you love and care about! I return to Arlington several times a year. Most of my family still lives there, as does our oldest son. It's really something seeing all the major growth in the city. It makes it difficult when some of the street names have changed. Our old neighborhood has really changed. I am really looking forward to our 30th reunion. I hope everyone will come so we'll have a great turnout and a lot of fun! See you there! If I won $100 million, I'd give 25% of it to fund mission work in Turkey, then spend the rest on a home for my family, a home for my Mom and college for my children. I will be 48 in April. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be grandparents, fat, bald and have lots of wrinkles. I was so completely wrong. Some people work hard on staying healthy and young and it shows. My greatest accomplishment in the career world is being named "Small Business Person of the Year" in 1998 by the Small Business Development of North Texas. I owned a children's retail store named Watercolor Ponies which I started with Paula (Bryant) Pannell. It was a great adventure for 3 years! If I had one do-over, I'd not have sex with a guy before marriage. Sex outside of marriage is over-rated. Sex within marriage, with a loving and loyal spouse is worth everything God intended it to be! The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Susan Birley, because We were great friends in school and stayed in contact until she married someone from England. Where is she now?. My greatest professional achievement happened in 1997 when I was named Small Business Person Of The Year for Northeast Texas, which included nine counties. I owned a children's retail store named Watercolor Ponies in Bonham, Texas.
