Lisa's Story

Life September 10, 2009 We are back in the USA! We are happy to be home. The Senegalese puppy is 2 years old and HUGE! Amazing what happens when you feed strays! She is loving our fenced, large backyard! One of our British kitties passed away while we were in Senegal so we also adopted a Senegalese cat. Two of my boys are in High School and the other in Middle School. My husband is at War College (ooooh....) for this year so there will (hopefully) be two graduates in our house next June. So now....to unpack the house...again... Dec. 9, 2007. I am currently living an eventful life in Senegal West Africa with my husband and three sons. We will living here for another 1 3/4 years and have already been here for over a year. We have been traveling with our two British kitties. Additionally, we have a puppy who is 3 mos. old and a Senegalese street dog and we have also acquired a chinchilla, a hamster as well as a turtle. I still love animals and my boys enjoy them as well. My sons are 11, 13 and 15. My husband joined the Foreign Service 20 years ago and we have been living overseas off and on since then. When in the USA we live in Northern Virginia only 36 miles from Washington DC. We are active with Boy Scouts and my husband teaches Scuba Diving as well. After moving frequently (Egypt, Greece, Russia, UK and now Senegal)I am trying to finish my degree before my oldest son goes to college. I have attended 5 universities at this point (keep moving away) and am now doing it on-line since the computer seems to come with me.: ) After substituting and teaching sc...Expand for more
ience I have decided to earn my teaching creds. When we are overseas it is hard to find a job in biology except for teaching and I have now substituted enough to know that I like to teach. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! April 19, 2009 Wow! Just saw that the last time I checked in was nearly 2 years ago! I have been having some great adventures in West Africa and now am preparing to return to Virginia. I can't wait to get home and see Ojai and Calif. It has been 3 long years. We will visit CA in mid-June and then see our great nation coast to coast by driving back to Northern Virginia. Africa has been interesting but the hardest place to live since we joined the US Dept. of State. Spent a lot of my time here ill. Finally I have adjusted to the climate and parasites and now we are leaving! Go figure! It is also difficult to see and not be able to help the million people living in poverty here. I eventually figured out away to help, but it is always just a few that benefit and I always want to do more but there are too many to help. It is overwhelming at times. We have enjoyed our safaris, camping in the desert, deep sea fishing, hikes, kayaking in the mangroves, scuba diving, scouting, helping out a village and getting to know them, and making new friends here. We have been lucky enough to had the opportunity to experience Africa and feel happy to have done so. We leave with a deeper understanding of human need and nature. We leave with the natural beauty of Africa as well. What an adventure, what a gift! I would love to hear from you all!
