Lisa's Story
Life
In the past, I was a band geek, competitive swimmer, speech & debate geek and varsity hurdler. So, I guess one could say I was a jock-geek (ha!).
I attended 10 different schools in 3 states K-12. Thankfully, just one college. So, if you think you might know me -- but aren't sure because it's this vague recollection, there's a good possibility I'm the person you remember me to be!
Today, I'm a WAHM with 4 children (soon to be 5), working on national promotions and marketing for a group of scrapbook/paper crafting stores. I am a published author (at least in my industries), in my name, and have written extensively "as" others...
I am also a homeschooling mom to a 4th grader, a 1st grader, K-5 -- and a toddler who audits all of the courses (ha!). Drop me a line -- I'd love to hear from you!
School
I went to so many schools over the years -- it made it very hard to make and maintain friends. I wish I knew where more people were (Heather H., Carie R., to name a couple), and I wish I was still in contact with many of them. I probably met most of my friends in church - Los Gatos Christian in California, 1st Baptist & Coral Ridge Pres in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
School is like a big blur to me now -- albeit with a few memories that really stand out. I love looking through the names of people who have signed in at classmates... occassionally one sparks a long forgotten memory that returns with the sweet innocence of youth.
College
What can I say about LU? My life was buried in working to pay for school, studying or debating. Double majoring in 3 years has its social drawbacks. If I had to do anything over it would probably be not debating a 4th year. I really enjoyed debating for LU and helping to set them on a course of unprecendented victories. While I enjoyed post-college life, I still miss not debating that 4th year and wonder what I might have accomplished (and even wo...Expand for more
nder if I may have been more easily persuaded to attend graduate school)
The biggest lesson I learned at LU -- do NOT play russian roulette with your roommates! Big mistake -- HUGE! The other lesson? I believe in a uniform standard when it comes to applying disciplinary action. If one person doesn't get written up when their clothes are all over the floor, their books in a heap, etc. because they are basically a slob, the "neat" person shouldn't get written up because her towel is hanging on the back of a chair to dry! ARGH!
Workplace
I finally stopped working for McDonald's (part time or full time) in 1991. My first "real" job was with Freedom Alliance, from there I worked for The American Defense Institute, before landing with The Lukens Company (a marketing firm). With TLC, I was able to merge my passion for politics and issues, with my passion for writing. I also coached the US Naval Academy Debate Team from 1991-1997 - and then started home school debate teams in Ft. Smith, AR and Fredericksburg, VA.
I went freelance, or out on "my own" in 1999, before finally "settling" into motherhood with the birth of my 2nd child, Kathryn, in 2002. I also drastically reduced my activities with the debate community -- although I still like to hear what's going on.
Now that Shaun & I have four children (soon to be FIVE!), I've completely changed industries. Instead of politics, it's all about crafting (scrapbooking). I enjoy the people, the family ties, and the creative outlet. I'm still writing though. I write articles focused mainly on the scrapbook industry, hoping to help other store owners and manufacturers succeed in this rather difficult market.
As if being a mom to four wasn't enough -- I am back to full-time work (albeit, from home). I homeschool our children, and enjoy providing them with a variety of tailored learning opportunities. It is a constant challenge!
