Lisa's Story
After graduation, I went in to the US Army, where I was trained to be a photographer. I went to basic at Fort McClellan in Alabama. During basic I broke my ankle and had to miss my reporting date for my original training, which would have been in air traffic control, forcing me to be reclassified as a photographer. After basic I was sent to Lowry Air Force Base near Denver, Colorado, where I was trained to be a photographer. During the final PT test at Lowry I messed up my left knee, tearing tendons and ligaments, and knocked my kneecap permanently out of place. I spent some time in a knee immobilizer, then several years in a knee brace. After that training I was sent to Fort Sheridan, headquarters for recruiting command, near Chicago, Illinois. I photographed re-enlistments, promotions, awards ceremonies, and ceremonies for visiting dignitaries from foreign countries. That was a job I did enjoy, meeting people from foreign countries. I met my first husband while in Chicago, and then was discharged after that knee injury that left me partially but permanently disabled. I now have a deteriorating condition in my knees forcing me to wear knee braces for the rest of my life. I was a housewife for 8 years before we divorced. We have 3 be...Expand for more
autiful children together. Then I went to work for the federal government, the National Archives and Records Administration, dealing with IRS tax returns. I then met and married my second husband and had another child. I left the federal government after almost 3 1/2 years of service to take care of my son, who had severe asthma and other medical problems. My husband and I have been together 10 years and married for 6 1/2 years. I was a housewife for 5 years before going to STNA school and got a job in a nursing home, Bethany Lutheran Village, in Centerville, Ohio. I've been there ever since, taking care of the elderly, and loving what I do. I'm now on third shift. My family and I live in Xenia. I also have two stepchildren and an adopted son. My father still lives in Chillicothe with my step-mother. My husband works for the National Archives and Records Administration and has been there for almost 10 years now. My oldest daughter, Mary, is getting ready to start college this fall at Clark State for Landscaping. We already have one daughter in college in Columbus, going for Accounting. Our oldest son is getting ready to go to nursing school to get his LPN license. My ultimate dream is to go to nursing school and get my RN license.
