Lisa's Story
Life
I am a single mom of 3 beautiful children. A 9 year old daughter, 5 year old son, and 2.5 (3 in Jan '08) yr old daughter. I went to Niagara College right after high school, for Graphic Design, and worked for the St. Catharines Standard in the composing dept. for just under 6 years when my entire dept was permanently laid off on Feb. 16th 2006. I had had no luck finding a job in my field, so I am currently working at an inbound call centre for customer service. I also went back to Niagara College for PSW (personal support worker) & am now done. I am also now employed at Behesda as a Support Worker for adults with developmental disabilities.
School
I started Kindergarten in 1984 at Applewood Public School. We moved to the west end in Nov. 1989 & I transferred to Westdale. The following year in Gr.6 I transferred to Oakridge. Graduated from there in June 1993. I went to Sir Winston Churchill S.S. for Gr.'s 9 & 10. I hated it there & transferred to Denis Morris Catholic Highschool in Sept. 1995 for Gr.'s 11 & 12. Graduated from DM in June 1997. Went...Expand for more
on the following year to Niagara College for Art & Design Fundamentals - Graphic Design Production & graduated in June 1999 with my diploma.
College
I attended Niagara College in Welland from 1997 to 1999. I graduated from the Art and Design Fundamentals - Graphic Design Production program. My daughter was born at the beginning of my second year which made it more difficult. But I still managed to be a mom and graduate on time.
I have just graduated again from Niagara College, this time for PSW (personal support worker), class of 2007.
Workplace
I worked for the St. Catharines Standard for almost 6 years. On Friday Feb. 16 my entire dept was permanently laid off. I had no luck finding work in my field of Graphic Design and have been working at Sitel, for Cox Communications (cable, high speed internet & digital telephone company in the US), we are the billing dept. I'm an escalations rep (sup calls). I have also started working at Bethesda in one of the Vineland group homes as a Support Worker working with adults with developmental disabiliies.
