Lora's Story
Updated 8-20-2008
Hello Blackhawk Fans;
For those who don't remember me, I grew up outside of Airway Heights on a 20 acre farm on Garfield Rd. We had the typical farm animals; cows, horses, dogs, cats, chickens, etc...
The Russell family was a large family but not as big as the Haases. I was number 7 of 8. Some of my siblings married their HS sweet hearts whom you might remember. Kathy married Doug Dahl, Marie (1975) married David Sukin, Glenn (1977) married Leilani Naluai, and Joe (1981) married Teena Bailey. Only Glenn and Lei are still married.
My education began at Sunset Elem. in Airway Heights. My greatest childhood memories are with Pam Soto, Wendy Fitzgerald, Heidi Hagman, Dev Hansen, Carla Parker and of course my neighbor and partner in crime, Cyndi Lemke.
Fisher Junior High was a lot of trials and tribulations. Wasn't it for everybody? The world was much bigger than Airway Heights. I met a whole new bunch of friends. Some got me in big trouble and some rescued me from making huge mistakes. One of my better choices was I joined the gymnastics team, which I was really bad at. Mrs. Williams would stick me in a corner and make me work by myself. Nadine, Angela, Christy and Diana were my role models. But I stuck with it all through HS. I think I even got better.
CHS was a blast for me. My grades were terrible. I should have fluncked out. Not sure why I didn't. I guess it was because I took all the PE, sewing, and art as I could to keep up my GPA. But, I loved the social life and the sports. Gymnastics and Track were my passion. I wasn't too bad at track either.
Well, I ended up a pretty simple person. After HS graduation, I moved to Reno. My first job was at Micky D's. I have to admit I really learned a lot there. But then I moved on to bigger dreams.
When I was 20 I had my son, Chris. I never married so I was a single parent. Actually, I still am. Parenting never stops.
I bought my house in 1989 not knowing too much about real estate at the time. Turned out I did the right thing. Just luck.
Chris is a goo...Expand for more
d son. I put him in AYSO soccer when he was 4 and he continued select and HS soccer. He even went to Italy and Austria to play international tournaments. He decided to go in the field of aviation and went to University of North Dakota where he received two degress. One degree in Aviation and the other a Business Degree in Airport Management. Currently, he is flying co-pilot for a corporate business here in Reno in a Lear Jet. Just trying to build flight hours.
23 years ago I ended up working for a mapping firm in town as the receptionist. I slowly worked my way around different departments learning new trades; photo lab, cartography, data processing and bookkeeping. Lastly, in 1991, I ended up taking the position as the camera operator using a mapping camera (military type) flying in a Cessna 206. This job really pushed my determination as I was told a woman couldn't do the job. Never tell me I can't!!!
Somewhere along my life I felt I needed a college education. I guess I thought that would make me feel smarter. I worked myself silly getting a dual degree in Elementary Ed and the second in Special Ed knowing I would probably never use it because I made more money at my current job. But, I needed to do it and I wanted the diploma saying "I have a brain". No regrets.
So, Retirement is approaching faster than I can imagine and my house is near paid for. All those Suzi Orman seminars on PBS and Opera Shows have really helped!!! Just kidding!!
I'm just looking forward to the day I can travel, see friends and not have to work and worry. Besides I have a son that owes me big time. College for him wasn't cheap.
My parents are approaching their 60th wedding anniversary soon. They sold the farm five years ago and moved into a senior community. They love it. No more bucking hay for dad.
That is pretty much my life. I Hope you have enjoyed reading about it and please e-mail me just to say Hi!
Oh! BTW, prostitution is not legal in Reno. It is only legal in Brothels out in the middle of nowhere. FYI.
All my best;
Lori aka "Lora"
