Loren's Story
Life
I retired from State of Arizona after 30 years with the Division of Developmental Disabilities and returned to College for a second degree. I completed my degree in Special Education in the Spring of 2008. Passed the AEPA teacher proficiency test and received my Teacher Certification that July.
It took we 55 years to learn phonics but I'm now using it to help children learn to read. I worked in a small Native American School for sixteen years. I taught Special Education part time, as well as gardening. I retired for good September 2020 when hit by a truck while riding my bike. I was lucky to only break my left leg.
I started tutoring students in reading at Heartland Elementary School in January 2023 through the AARP Foundation Experience Corps. I suggest that if it sounds interesting to you, to join. It's expanding in Pinal County, but It's also in other areas of the state. You can even do it virtually from the comfort of home anywhere in the United States.
My parents lived on South 3rd Street in Coolidge. They celebrated their 74th Wedding Anniversary in December 202...Expand for more
1. Mom passed away in March 2022. Dad passed away the end of June 2022.
I'm not as fat due to Type 2 Diabetes. I had lost 80 pounds and no longer had to take the medication. Since gaining 40 pounds the diabetes is not controlled with diet and exercise, and I have to take a pill.
Still have a white beard, and often mistaken for Santa. I am Santa for 52 mentally handicapped adults, and the Salvation Army.
One of my interests is reading. I really enjoyed Henry Winkler's books. He over came a learning disability. I encourage students to read them to demonstrate that they have the ability to be successful. I also love poems and stories by Sherman Alexie. He is Native American who writes about conditions on Indian Reservations with tears and humor. I suggest you read some of their work.
It was mentioned in the news that people who have a Face Book Page are narcissistic. I assume that also applies to persons who pay for a subscription to Classmates and tell what's happening in their lives.
In conclusion, God's been good! I've been blessed and hope he's been the same to you!
