Lorrie's Story

Hi Everyone! I've just joined Classmates as I had some great friends in school I would love to reconnect with. I'm single, my son Zachary is 25 and when he was 4 years old he had the blondest hair and he has beautiful green eyes. Who would have thought I'd have a baby with blonde hair?! I have a position with the Provincial Government. I first started as a Financial Assistance Worker for Income Assistance and then became a Verification Officer still with the Income Assistance program. That position I loved as I had many different exciting opportunities in my career. I bought my first home, a townhouse in Maple Ridge 15 years ago and have loved being a homeowner ever since. I sold the townhouse 5 years ago and moved to Penticton where I purchased half a duplex, just over 2000 sq ft, in a beautiful neighbourhood, across from tennis courts. The house needed a lot of TLC when I first purchased it and I found another passion, purely out of neccessity at the time (the budget), home renovations. In my home I installed new light fixtures, put in a kitchen tile backsplash, installed laminate hardwood flooring upstairs and in the basement, installed molding and installed upper and lower cupboards in the basement suite which I also did most of the work in. I absolutely love it here, the people are wonderful, it's a beautiful community to live in and it's a fun place to live with all the different festivals and events. I've had some exciting experiences in my life too. I had been randomly entering contests and was lucky enough to win a trip to St Lucia on the Live with Regis and Kelly Show. Yes, I was one of the people who got to speak with Regis and kelly on the phone. Usually the show is live but this time they were filming for when they were on hiatus so I actually got to tape it. They also had "Wild" on the wheel which Regis was kind enough to hit for me that morning. Not only did I get to choose where I wanted to go for my trip if I won but it also meant Kelly was going to spin a smaller wheel. I could win either an additional prize or land on "instant winner" I landed on "instant winner", I didn't have to answer any question. Woo Hoo. The resort was absolutely beautiful, I loved St Lucia. We had daily spa treatments with the last day's treatment being a full body massage. Ooohhh La La...Expand for more
. So I got the actual phone call in July, in aired Sept 1st and I went on the trip March the following year. In July, the same year I took the trip, I went to the coast with Dan (my boyfriend at the time, he didn't get to go to St Lucia-boyfriends come and go, I took my Sister-in-Law who I had asked before I met Dan) to visit two of my good friends I used to work with Sandy and Sue. The four of us went to the casino but both of their hubby's couldn't join us as they both had to work. Poor Dan, 3 women to take out all on his own, life's tough! He had this great bald head and in the parking lot I decided to rub it for good luck as the last time I had done that I had won approx $400 at the Penticton casino. Sure enough I won $200 and quit but my friend Sandy continued and she was the only one still gambling so I thought, ok, I'll spend up to $40 of my winnings. I decided to play a nickel machine with a progressive jackpot. Progressive jackpots are my favorite and I always play the maximum otherwise why bother. I won $12,069.40!!!!! I couldn't believe it! I was in shock! I had so much fun with the money!. I of course did some responsible things. Then I gave my son $200 and my niece $150. Gave my parents and Dan's Mom and my brother and his wife $100. Then I gave 4 special friends $50 to do something nice for themselves. One girlfriend said, I'm putting this away for the next time I go gambling and I'm going to use this $50, it's lucky money! The best part was when I went shopping around town to make a food donation to the local food bank. I was at Zellers buying some items for the food bank and there was this young man in line behind me and I'm telling them my story and what I'm doing. I look at the young man behind me and all he's buying is 4 cans of Chunky Soup. He made me think of my son, being on his own and 4 hours away eating lots of canned soup. I said to the waitress, put his soup on my bill. I looked at him and said my treat today. He said, really? Thanks. Really? Wow! Thanks. It was great to see his reaction. Who knows if that was his last few bucks or not, it doesn't matter, it made my day and hopefully put a smile on his face for a while. Maybe he might even do the same for someone else one day. I look forward to reading everyone's profiles and hopefully reconnecting. Lorrie
