Louis's Story

After graduation in 1965, I spent the month of July getting a private pilot's license at Rockliffe Airbase thanks to a Flying Scholarship I won from the Optimist Club of Ottawa (you may remember that I often wore my air cadet uniform to school on Tuesdays in Grade 9). In the Fall of 1965, I attended military college at CMR (College Militaire Royale at St. Jean, QC). I left that in January 1966 (It just was not for me) and took a weather observing course at Ottawa Airport from Feb to Apr and then an advanced course (Upper Air Observing) from May to Aug. I then was posted for a year at the DEW Line station at Hall Beach NWT (just north of the Arctic Circle). I left Upper Air and returned to St. Pat's in Sept 1967 for Grade 13. At this point St. Pat's had relocated from Echo Drive to Campanile. In the Spring of 1968, Bernard Marshall, Robert Hanforth, Charles Macli and myself made up St. Pat's Reach for the Top team. We won the Ottawa Regional Championship and went to Vancouver to compete in the National Championship (we lost in the opening round). After that, I returned to upper air observing at several other weather stations (Maniwaki QC, Fort Chimo QC, Frobisher Bay NWT, Clyde River NWT and Resolute Bay NWT) from Aug 1968 till Aug 1971 and Sep 1972 to Aug 1973. I went to Queen's University at Kingston ON for 1st year in 1971...Expand for more
-72 and returned after a 1-year break in 1973 to complete my degree and earn my BSc in Electrical Engineering in 1976. I stayed on at Queen's in the School of Graduate Studies from 1976 to 1979. In Sep 1979, I was hired on at GE Canada in Peterborough ON as a control and drive design engineer. Initially my designs were for paper mill applications. As my experience level increased, I was given more complex design assignments in the steel mill industry designing very large precision power supplies (750VDC, 5500 Amps) and the automation control system for the then new DOFASCO No. 2 Hot Strip Mill in Hamilton ON. I also designed the AC (Cycloconverters) propulsion drive systems for 7 Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers built in the mid-1980s. In 1991, after completing the design and starting the automation system for a steel mill in Detroit Michigan, I was hired on by GE Drive Systems in Salem Virginia when GE Canada exited the drives and control business. At GE Drive Systems, I continued to design automation systems (mostly) for steel mills around the world (USA, China, France, Turkey, Slovakia) until my retirement in 2014 from a successor company (TMEIC Corp) after GE exited the systems business in 2003. I now live with my wife of 31 years in Salem Virginia and enjoy a good part of our Summers at our cottage in Floyd County VA. .
