Luana's Story
Life
Lordy be, do I have memories!... All I can remember about attending PS 13 was that my sister, Crystal, got hit by a taxi cab while crossing the street to get to school in the rain. I remember teasing her about having a hole in her head for the rest of her life had they not invented stitches!... Then I went to PS 102 & I had Mrs. Stamato (she had the brightest red hair I had ever seen!). I remember Fobbie Pevsner was my arch enemy, though I can't ever recall feeling that way about anyone ever again in my life & can't understand why we were like fire & ice... Perhaps it was that crush we both had on a guy named Bobby! LOL!... Then I remember Frank Price, the class clown & how he'd ALWAYS pull practical jokes on Mrs. Stamato... The Bi-Centennial class trip to DC was awesome! I chewed on ice cubes while the other kids snuck drags off of cigarettes in the hotel room - what a nerd I was! & I actually got to see a squirrel on the White House lawn for the first time (usually squirrels just ran away, but this one actually let us get close - so I got to see what one really looked like)... Back then, I hung out with Brenda & Sandra Ramirez & Gina Hernandez... I also started to hang with Lydia Napello & Sandra Belitsis & we three got real close while I attended IS 61... Then my foster parents, Leopardo & Viola Perez, sent me & my sisters to Cardinal McCloskey's... & my memories there are both good & bad... Mostly bad... I did have this "thing" for a guy named Joey Evans, but he was bouncing around so much between me & Charlene Malloy that it was hard to tell how he really felt... While at McCloskey's, I hung with Laura Wallace, Jeannie D'Ambrosio (poor girl was set on fire by her own mother while in her high chair when she was a few months old & had bad scarring on her neck & lower jaw) & Diana Dones (prounced Dough-Nez). I ran away so much that they decided to place me at St. Dominics, while my sisters stayed at McCloskey's. That was the turning point in my life! In 1979, I graduated St. Dominic's as the class Valedictorian (not saying much... It wasn't a large graduating class - LOL!). I remember I wrote my speech on "The Year of the Child" & was REALLY nervous during the oration of it. Though not th...Expand for more
ere long, I became real close with Martha Hernandez & wonder how she has turned out. My mother came all the way from South Carolina to see my graduation & to take me back home with her, leaving the custody of the state of New York (Catholic Home Bureau - aka Catholic Charities) in my rear view mirror forever! It's so hard to be an Episcopal child in a Catholic system & I sure didn't like having to wear that Catholic School uniform every day! From there, I attended Goose Creek High School in Goose Creek, SC - Class of 1983, where I hung with Karen & Nancy Drewry, Billy & Gary Wright (Billy was my on again, off again boyfriend), John Cox, Gordon Moore, Richie Pendergrass, Sandy Cadenhead, Kim Teague & Jeff & Charlotte Jackson. I was married by 18, the mother of 3 children by age 23 & divorced by 24. I remarried & was again divorced 12 years later. Not a bad thing, for it was I who chose to end those relationships. My oldest son (Jemini, age 24) joined the US Army when he was 19 & was honorably discharged in October, 2006. He lives about 20 minutes away. His current economic status has forced his hand and he has decided to re-enlist, but this time in the U.S. Army Reserves. His unit is at Ft. Gordon, GA. It really stinks that someone would have to resort to signing their life away as a tool for survival, but I completely understand his reasons for doing so (though I can't say I like it during wartime) and I support his decision to live his own life. My youngest son (Micheau, age 21) returned from a 15 month tour-of-duty in Iraq in October, 2007 and recently announced that I will become a grandmother this September! This is a first for me (and him), so I am pretty excited! I hope he stays close to home, but I completely understand if the highest income potential guides him elsewhere. After all, he now has a family of his own to support. Then again, if the friggin' Army has it's way, he'll be off in sand country soon! My daughter (Kira, age 19) lives in North Charleston and seems to be doing fairly well as a Customer Service Representative in a local call center. So I guess you can say my linear family is fairly close. At least for now. Considering how I grew up, I'd say that's a MAJOR accomplishment!
