lyle's Story

Hey all. Too much time has gone by to catch up with everyone, so will leave a note on this page. For those of you with a good enough memory to actually remember me, I've bounced around quite a bit. I had a great time in HS, loved playing football, but didn't like having to actually work for marks! I was politely shown the door half way through my second try at Grade 13! Worked in Toronto for a bit, went to York U for a couple years, but not long enough to get my BA. Just couldn't take any more school. In 1982 I joined the Canadian Army as a field artillery officer. Finally hit my stride (which was a good thing after half a dozen years of drifting after High School). I stayed in the Regular Force until transferring to the Primary Reserve in 2010. I had some great jobs, served with some exceptional men and women, reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and finally completed my degree (did it part time while deployed overseas, while working a 10-12 hour days in garrison as well as while in the field on training exercises, not an easy way of doing it. Sure wish I had the wisdom at 20 that I had at 40, so I finished my degree early like normal people!). Over the years I've lived in every province and territory except SK, PEI and Nunavut. That' 13 different cites and towns in Canada, and number of temp deployments overseas from a few months to just under a year. I got married in 1987, we had our son Tyler in 1992. Luckily he is much more focused than his Dad was and is in 1st year engr in D...Expand for more
alhousie. I am currently in the Reserve Army but doing a full time job, the Commanding Officer of 5 Cdn Ranger Patrol Group based out of Gander, NL. This is a three year appointment and will likely be my last job in the Army. In all the moves we've had, we have owned 7 houses. When we moved to NS in 2010, we lucked in an landed a gorgeous home right on the ocean about 45 minute east of Halifax. My wife Lori firmly stated she was sick of moving, and we weren't leaving that house for a while. I agreed with her completely (i do have occasional flashes of sanity), so I am here in Gander on my own for couple years. It makes sense, as this job has me traveling two weeks of every month all over Nfld and Labrador. I have 35 Patrols to visit and a 1,000 Rangers so wouldn't be much of a home life if she was here too. I get back home about once every 4-6 weeks, and occasionally Lori pops over here to see a bit of the island. Who knows whats next. I have to leave the Army in four years due to compulsory retirement. I love the job, but 30 + years of field work, parachuting and deploying in some of the most god forsaken corners of the world takes its toll. I have to admit I feel like I just left High School yesterday, but then quick look in the mirror shows that's certainly not true! If anyone out there want to take the time to tap out a few notes of what you've been up to over the past few decades, I'd be interested to hear. All the best to everyone. Hope your all living life full! Cheers, Lyle
