Lyle's Story

I left Central and went to PC for a year and ahalf, living with Dave Lindstrom. I realized I wasn't ready for college then so I joined the Army as a medic and spent 2 years In Landstuhl, Germany. Got out and went back to PC where I started hanging out with guys from the class of '67 because all of my class of 65 friends had left. Class of 67 guys liked me because I was old enough to buy beer. When they all turned 21, they still hung around with me so I think they really liked me. The next 5 years were spent going to school at ASU irregularly, going to Indiana to work during the summers, going to Mexico surfing, trying to be a hippie, and worked odd jobs part-time until I finally got my degree in sociology in '74. By then I realized that all a bachelor's degree in Sociology qualified me for was to get a masters in sociology and I already knew all I wanted to know about sociology. The only thing left to do was get another degree, this time in Elementary Education. I did my student teaching in Payson. I was the first student teacher Payson had ever had. They even put an article abut me in the local paper! Then I actually started a career as a teacher in the Washington School District in Phoenix. I met a girl at JayD Schlueter's wedding and e got married 2 years later. We have 2 daughters and I taught for 12 years. My wife was a homemaker and stay at home mother so we were a family living on a teacher's income. We did pretty well at that, but I was always looking for good part time work.. In '82 my daughter went to a birthday party and there was a clown there entertaining the kids. She was having so much fun and when I saw how much she was paid, I knew what I wanted to do. I ...Expand for more
spent a year learning everything I could about the art of clowning. Then I started performing anywhere I could, working (if you can call it that) most weekend days gave me a lot of experience and I got pretty good. In '87 I went to University of Wisconsin during the summer to study Clowning. Yes, you can do that! While there I made a friendship with "Mr.Clown" a famous clown and he told me about upcoming auditions for Ronald McDonald. I went to the audition and won the role. I spent the next 25 years traveling around the southwest entertaining as Ronald McDonald. I made over 6,000 appearances at parades, schools, hospitals, professional sports events,(I have thrown out about 30 opening pitches at professional baseball games), restaurant grand openings and once was the opening act and got to introduce Mohammad Ali. Almost everyday I worked I would be in front of an audience, juggling, doing magic or just clowning around, but in my mind I was saying, "I can't believe they are paying me to do this!" It was the best job I could imagine. But alas, by 2012, I was getting wrinkles, and you can't be a cultural icon and have wrinkles. At least that is what my corporation thought, so I was let go. Since then I've gotten back into education. I developed a school assembly show, a magic show about math for grade school audiences. During the summer I do magic shows to motivate kids to want to learn to read. These shows are done at pre-schools and libraries throughout Arizona.. During December I am Santa Claus. I also go to Puerto Penasco, Mexico a couple of times a year with Association of International Ministries and do gospel magic shows or entertain as Papa Noel. Life is good.
