Lynne's Story

As forecast in the Bonnie Doon class of '60 yearbook, when I graduated at age 17 I joined the Navy as an officer cadet. I loved the Navy and spent 36 1/2 years there. I must have had a hundred different jobs, and I'll try not to bore you, but of interest: 1. I was certified to drive a warship (as the Officer of the Watch) at age 22 when I still wasn't licensed to drive a car. 2. I spent 3 years as a member of the Armed Forces Biathlon Team, winning the Armed Forces Championships twice and competing in the World Championships in 1966. 3. I had the pleasure of commanding at six different levels including a Destroyer, a Canadian Destroyer Squadron, a NATO Force, the Navy on the east coast, and finally, the Canadian Navy. In 1994-95, as the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, I controlled all Canadian Forces operations for the Chief of the Defence Staff. 4. I was awarded an honorary doctorate from RMC and served on the Board of Governors of RMC, despite flunking out of the military college system at age 20. After retiring from the Navy in 1997 I said yes to a num...Expand for more
ber of positions and projects. For 10 years I was a research fellow at Dalhousie's University's Centre for Foreign Policy Studies. During that period I received an honorary doctorate of laws from Dalhousie. For eight years I served as the CEO of a software company, a challenge I was completely happy with. But, in the late fall of 2014 it was time, as it is with all things, to move on. Today, I'm mostly retired. Now I have time to accompany Christine on her trips abroad. Luckily I'm married to Christine and have two children and three grand children. We adore travel and our cottage. Favourite memories of Bonnie Doon: mature, achievement oriented students; Sandra Mark; Bill MacLean (an inspiring teacher and humanitarian); great student athletes; Mr Ward (a wonderful principal); and Alan Bleviss' acting. From Hamilton: Mr Dunlop. From Sutherland: Merla Roseane. From Highlands: absolutely nothing. From Mount Royal: hard to say, it was so long ago. To anyone who has the slightest memory of me and to those who don't (you have little reason to): cheers. Lynn
