Maurice's Story

I try to recall what it as like growing up in rural Michigan in the1930's and 40's and it's hard to remember a lot of things. We lived in a big house and behind it were two small homes, side by side. I understand that at one time Grandpa and Grandma lived in one of them and Mom and Dad in the other. I suspect Dad built them at one time as I was told he built the one we were living in. (Dad was a carpenter, and as you know I was born on December 25) It was a big house and he surely had help. I remember when a house was being built close by, second house past ours, Dad and my oldest brother Albert helped. I guess that's what people did back then. Eventually the two small houses were sold and moved away. Only the one common out house remained. A two seater. War was going on in Europe and, Canada became involved as it belonged to England. miles northeast from us. They would be bussed to a little airport about a mile from our home for initial flying lessons. The U.S. finally got in the war. I remember the day after it was announced on the radio (No TV back then). The next morning when we were outside the sky was all red in the east and we kids thought that was caused by the war. In Detroit, all the auto factories were converted to war use, building airplane, tanks, jeeps and bombs. My sister, Marge, worked on building bombers. she was a rivet inspector, probably started as a riveter. Food and gasoline were rationed and tires were unavailable. We'd practice air raids and had to turn off all lights and watch for possible enemies. Gas was available for authorized use only, like traveling to work. We'd walk to the highway and ride a bus to go anywhere. I remember taking the bus to the county seat with Mom to stand in line for free government food.
