M. Rita's Story
The day after HS graduation, I went directly to McGill University & then Hofstra New College. The object was to finish the BA in 3 yrs, and do graduate work at the Monterey Institute of Foreign Languages with training for military or State Dept service, but, I deviated. Instead I studied foreign lit, philosophy and art, began taking classes with professional modern dance companies in Manhattan, and became accustomed to working almost full time while studying.
Then, I married, started grad school at the University of Madrid, & continued at SUNY Albany with husband. We returned to LI so husband could pursue professional music career and advanced classical training in Manhattan.
My son was born in 1972, and I completed a Masters while again taking classes with modern dance companies in Manhattan. For several years, I earned a living simultaneously as a part-time academic teacher (English, Spanish, French, ESL)and a dance teacher, choreographer,& small dance-company director on the lecture/demo and artist-residence circuit.
I returned to grad school for a doctorate in education-research and evaluation with the objective of using research and assessment to help effective academic and arts programs. Along the way, I again deviated from the objective by becoming more involved with social and health/rehab programs, than with arts & academics.
I worked in eduational program evaluation and project managment for Nassau BOCES; then in research design and analysis for NPD, a national market-research firm; taught graduate level Intro to Ed Research Design and Analysis at Adelphi university for 1yr and also taught HS English and Spanish full time....Expand for more
I learned that I hated teaching graduate classes and loved teaching high school. Along the way, first husband and I parted ways, and I remarried.
Following my husband's dream, We left the NY area in 1986-87 for the west coast of FL (Tampa Bay region). I worked in case managment supervision for persons with severe disabilities and then in a long-term national reseach study of emotionally disturbed children & adolescents.
When the research project ended I followed an attractive assessment and project managment position to Texas A&M University College of Engineering & moved to central TX twd the end of 1994. In 2005 I became the university Director of Institutional Research and Assessment for Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, so I now live in Huntsville, TX ,the piney hills,an hour and a half north of Houston and three and a quarter hours south of Dallas.
I was widowed in 2008. My son is 36 yrs old, and has been a full-time songwriter, bandleader and performer for the past 16 yrs. When not touring, he lives in Maine. My mother sold her house in NHP about 9 yrs ago and moved to Cambridge MA. My younger sister has lived in Cambridge MA for almost 30 yrs.
I am a happy workaholic who may never voluntarily retire. My Huntsville house required extensive renovation and repair, so, I'm absorbed in hands-on home improvement when not working.
I lost contact with almost everyone I knew from HS by 1970. About 15 years ago I made efforts to track down members of the Class of 67 but failed to find anyone, so stopped. In early 2008 , I ran into Tommy Dean in cyberspace, and have been slowly seeking out former schoolmates ever since.
