Mabel's Story
Life:
How quickly time flies when you're having fun! It's hard to believe that more than 31 years have come and gone. Life has been a wonderful journey! I am a nurse. I have been married since September 2000 to Phillip Barraza. We raised children Briana and Yukay (June), and we feel fulfilled. Fortunately, we are also blessed with many other children through Phillip's theatre teaching career. We were blessed in 2017 with our own baby girl! Currently, our home continues to be in El Paso to be close to our families. However, we do travel and plan to live elsewhere, possibly Boston, Toronto, South Korea, and/or Italy. Our lives continue to be very much interdependent, and we look forward to growing old together. Happiness is not a destination. It is a journey. The journey we are on has been blessed and joyous. There are certain times when I must remember to count my blessings, which are many.
Our then photo was taken at a Quincenera in November,1990.
Workplace:
In the nursing field, I've finally found my place. I started off my career in the nursing home circuit where I was able to adopt multiple grandparents and touch the life of a very special young man, Chris. Later, circumstances...Expand for more
gave me the opportunity to enter the world of psychiatric nursing, which I still love. God then led me into hospice nursing, and every day was filled with rewards. Due to the emotional investment required to be a hospice nurse, I finally had enough and made a decision to seek new opportunities. I was a wound treatment nurse at a nursing home. I was able to practice a little psych nursing, a little hospice nursing, and everything I thought nursing would be caring and knowing my patients.
A person who desires change, I then worked at the Providence Wound Institute as a wound care nurse. I loved my patients. I guess all the years of candy striping at Providence made me feel that I owed the institution something, and I stayed there for much too long. Another opportunity came my way, and I moved to Thomason to become the Pre-Authorization nurse. I enjoy being the bridge between third-party payers and the patients. I think moving to Thomason now, University Medical Center has been life altering. I grew professionally with the expansion of the hospital and my continued professional development. I now work at EPCH and am ever so blessed being a Mom and serving the pediatric population.
