Malcolm's Story

Life My parents are both gone now so I am officially an orphan. A difficult rite of passage. Have a son,Tennessee Boyd was born on the 31st of July, '07 with 7.5 lbs. He has reddish blond hair like his mother. All signs point to a healthy child and he and his mother are well. I am a coxwain for the Tuesday morning women's rowing team and still have my hand in construction work. With luck, I will be able to continue my life of adventure and travel albeit, with a bit more luggage and responsibility. I have been a volunteer fire fighter with the Tisbury Fire Department for about 12 years. I enjoy activities in the outdoors and have paddled a Kayak in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Maine, Massachusetts and Florida and camped in those places as well. I enjoy hunting (though don't enjoy killing). I enjoy cooking but Liz is taking over with my coaching. I was sent away for high school and dropped out in my senior year in 1969. I hitched around the country for about 6 months, stopping in Nova Scotia, went to the Woodstock Festival, Altamont Stones Concert and many others. Stayed in San Francisco for a couple of months trying to make sense out of life. It was a difficult time. After returning to Amityville around Christmas of '69, I worked at Kenmaze Advertising, printing silk screen images for a while till I was (easily) convinced to finish HS. I ended up graduating with my little sister, Allyson, in '71. After graduation, I rode around northern Europe for a month or two on a Triumph 500 and returned home ready for some wilderness escape. So, I left the ville to study at Franconia College. I have travelled a fair amount and have been to Europe where, most recently I visited Normandy to accompany my father in a sort of 60th anniversary of his landing there in July, 1944. We also visited St Lo, the site of a bloody battle which resulted in his being seriously wounded and put out of the war. We actually found the location of his position when hit. I have also travelled to Brazil often (learned to speak portuguese) where I had the opportunity to learn much about the culture and visit with brother George who lives in the state of Minas Gerais. He is a pianist and piano technician, perhaps the best in Brasil. School My Biggest crushes were for Beth Parry and Patty Gill, but they occured before I knew how to behave. Miss Saslo, Miss Lori, Mr Region were some of my most inspiration...Expand for more
al teachers in Amityville. My St Peter's years were pretty desperate. Mrs. Scott encouraged me in art and I continued that through college. Fun was found doing the illegal things including climbing the water towers to drink beer and take in the view of the Hudson River and the mothball fleet. College My favorite times at college were hiking in the mountains and sex. I also enjoyed camping, working at sawmills, fishing, building projects, gardening and hunting. I actually enjoyed a few courses, too. I received in AA in Fine Art at Franconia. Workplace I have never had a sitdown job, with the possible exception of sitting while steering a yacht making extended passages. I spent about five years sailing around the caribbean and east coast of the USA working on boats. I continued with occasional stints as captain of various yachts till about 1991 and working for the outward bound company. I helped start a community sailing and rowing organization (Vineyard Voyagers and MV Rowing) which has about 40 or 50 members and has recently merged with another sailing program(Sail MV). Home construction has been my principal money maker for about 34 years. I have worked as a counsellor in a school for adjudicated youths and as an instructor for Outward Bound sailing, taught a couple of courses of portuguese for adults, and been a substitute teacher in the local school system. Military I always wanted to emulate my father, grandfather who both served and were wounded in France during the 1st and 2nd world wars and those of my friends who have served in the military, by going to war to protect our country and family. Unfortunately I was not able to enlist with a clear conscience because, when the time came for me to make a choice to serve, I was faced with what my family felt was an immoral, illegal and pointless war in Viet Nam. I feel as though we are facing a Deja Vu now. In lieu of military service I have been a volunteer fire fighter on the Confined Space/Technical Rescue/RIT and HAZMAT teams for about 12 years, receiving training, training others and helping the community. My company, responds to car accidents (the most difficult involving young people), airplane crashes, house fires, brush fires, dumpster fires and automatic alarms, 24/7. It makes life interesting and gives me a sense of contributing to our community while still being able to get away for extended periods of time.
