Manuel's Story
Born in Fresno in 1943, I lived in Mendota for the next eleven years. We lived next to Tony Bou's movie house on what is now Quince street. I then moved to Huron, at the end of the sixth grade, and graduated from nearby Coalinga High School in 1960. My six sisters and one brother, all younger, are also CHS grads. I attended junior college in Coalinga, then transferred to UCSB in 1963, receiving a PhD in history nine years later. Married to Cindy Merrill (born in Kansas), I live in Walnut Creek. We have two married daugters: Vanna, who teaches at Contra Costa Community College and is married to Curtis Barnes; and Amalia, an architect and single mom living in Copenhagen, Denmark. We have three grandchildren: Julius Barnes and Aida and Uma Gonzales Dahl.

ny years ago. My teachers then included Mrs. Ripley, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Cox (twice), Mrs. Lydia Kruse, and Mr. Andres Gil. If you are from Mendota and graduated from Tranquillity High School in 1960, or know anyone fitting this description, please contact me. I am desperate to find out the names of these classmates, and, eventually, to try to find out what happened to them. I've made about twenty-five trips to Mendota since I retired. I have found and communicated with a dozen classmates: Joe Mora, Maria Hurtado, Ralph Espinoza, Wayne Nolan, Dolores Arreola, Lupe Ramirez (Petry), Jess Garcia, Robert Silva, Peggy Stamoules, Bettye Coursey Buckmaster, Patsy Lowrie, and Joe Diaz.
