Marc's Story
Life
YIMID-llahlahkje
Worked when I got out of school, tech jobs... data entry to start, then tech support, then network security.
Worked for a few 'companies' of some note... [Trustmark Insurance, Department of Defense] ... ((and a few unremarkable ones)), before I decided to stop going to school part time and go full time... and that's where I am now...
I was getting a degree in computer science with minors in cognitive science and anthropology, but I changed to a history major, and will graduate with the above two minors, plus a minor in computer science.
Unfortunately, the change has made me too busy to pursue my own research projects, my non-university academic pursuits are pretty much stonewalled until after the spring.
I have had a chance, however, to write more than I have in a long time, so I suppose that is good.

College

Computer Science major, Anthropology and Cognitive Sciences minor...
Artificial Intelligence is where it is at! As long as I'm not taken up by aliens or anything... I'll be doing research on machine generated English (natural language processing) in Spring 2006, yee haw!
I'm also involved in the Campus Crusade for Christ, I help coordinate the social events, it's a lot of fun...

UPDATE MID-2006
Lord have mercy! My computer science pursuits have become less academic and more personal. I'm "all about" history now, I had been before but not academically.
I'm focu...Expand for more
sed on foreign relations history and am hoping to do well on the foreign service exam when I am finally done with college for a few years. (I'll probably go back)
Do I still use my computer science? Sure! I'm writing an add-on to Word that will make citing sources on my thesis easier!
20 grand and well spent, let me tell you! haha!
Anyway, I'm going to Malaysia in May, and potentially to Austria for the summer, things are looking exciting!
Workplace
YIMID-llahlahkje
I don't have a "workplace" persay whilst in school.
I had a number of exciting jobs, though!
I was the primary security administrator for Trustmark Insurance company for a couple of years (before going back to school) ... I made sure their network and software was secure. They gave me a nice sounding title (Sr. Operations Analyst) but I called my job: Data Janitor. Basically, when someone spilled their data in a way that made the network hallways inaccessible for other people, I had to throw sawdust on it.
Metaphorically speaking.
Anyway, I've also worked in database design (not as exciting as it sounds, I assure you) for a business to business marketing agency (I still feel a little dirty) and built computers for a mom n'pop PC shop (we did tech support for local businesses, too) ... and I even had an exciting stint with the Department of Defense on a classified project. It's not *actually* exciting, but the fact I can't talk about it tends to make it sounds that way.
That's it, the long and short of it. Actually, pretty much just the short of it.
