Marcia's Story

Life Got off to a rocky start, uprooted from friends at 15 and moved "all the way" to Charlottesville, but have had an interesting life. Married, two daughters plus a "might as well be" daughter, one in Charlottesville, one in Richmond and one nearby at Lake Monticello. Six grandchildren, plus two "adopted" grandchildren. Retired after 34 yrs. in Telecommunications Engineering. Love to travel with my husband and family, and have been suprised at how busy I am. Hope all my former classmates/friends are well and happy - would love to hear from you. School Most inspiring teacher would have to be Mrs. Betty Pittman. She showed a real interest in teaching, and in the students. Biggest crush must remain a secret ... but close second was Mr. Eddy, who taught me math. He was single, had a corvette, graduated from VMI, and cute as a button. Most devastating day was my first day at Lane High. Had just moved to Charlottesville the day before, and my neighborhood had just been annexed from the County. My next-door neighbor, who became a good friend, still went to Albemarle. Folks at Lane all thought I was an 8th-grader, probably because they had never seen me before. Unlike the folks I grew up with in the West End of Richmond, these students were decidedly unfriendly. Fortunately, there were two that reached out, with several more to follow in time. Big adjustment for a 15-year-old, but I have lived to tell the tale! Best memories are from Short Pump Elem., Tuckahoe Jr., and Tucker High, where the atmosphere was most conducive to learning and the people were warm and welcoming. College experiences were also good, with my focus totally on academics. College After marriage, a child, and a divorce, I realized how important my education actually was. Had dropped out of HS to marry, so got GED and started college while working full time and raising my daughter. Became a college grad and a grandmother within a few ...Expand for more
days of each other. Continued work on 2nd degree until a takeover and re-org at work transferred me out of state. Work schedule has prevented my going back after coming back to Charlottesville in 2000 (plus building a house), but hope to complete MBA and/or PhD before I shuffle off .... Workplace Held the usual babysitting jobs, and played piano, while still in HS. Worked at Law Publishing Firm as proofreader, spent a few months as a long distance operator, lasted 3 yrs. as a pharmacy clerk, overlapped with 3 yrs. as medical records transciptionist, a yr. as secretary to construction firm president, then back to telephone work. This time I was in the engineering department and found my calling at last. Worked with the local telephone company (Va. Tel. & Tel. then Centel and now Sprint) for 35 yrs. All my time was spent in engineering, first as a secretary, then a Facility Administrator, and then as District, Regional and National Engineering Manager for various engineering applications. Now I'm retired and enjoying life! Military No military ... too pig-headed and too old!! Love to travel, read, listen to music and spend time with my family. The best stress-reliever is to see my little great-grandson smiling up at me! I guess my hero was my father. He had a high school education, but worked hard and became a Regional Director for Continental Trailways. He could fix anything, restored two antique Fords - a 1931 and a 1940 - including sewing new seat covers. He died young, 53, from heart problems stemming from childhood rheumatic fever. I miss him still. My Aunt Nell was also a big inspiration - she worked in the airplane factory during WWII, had her one and only child at home with only a midwife, could build a house right alongside any man, and was sassy and so much fun. Lost her this year. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be nearly dead. I was so completely WRONG.
