Margaret's Story

Life I have been married to my husband for 49 years and we have 2 children, one of each, and 3 grandchildren, two girls and a boy. We have lived in the same house in San Jose for 48 of those years (pretty stable, huh?), and all our children and grandchildren but one live in town. What's more, my mom is still with us too. I worked at Stanford University (3 months shy of 25 years) and am NOW RETIRED! YAY!!!! My passion is singing and music in general, and I have been singing, performing, traveling, and assistant directing in a championship barbershop chorus for 45 years. I also have sung in a small octet (not barbershop!) with people from the local area. The chorus performs locally, both in recital type venues and for rest homes and hospitals at the Holiday season. I knit, crochet, make counted and printed X-stitch projects, plastic canvas objects, beaded ornaments, and generally try to keep busy and "off the streets"! I'm now trying to become proficient enough at knitting to teach it. Hope to mentor some young girls in all this stuff some day. My dearest hope is to see my grandchildren raised and happy. I always wanted to be a performer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my back yard and add on at least one room. My dream home would be one big enough to have my mother live with me, and I'd be able to afford to have a maid on a regular basis. Not likely now that we're retired. If I won $100 million, I'd give at least enough of it to my children for them to have homes in this area, then spend the rest on making my mother's life more comfortable, helping my chorus secure a permanent home, and travel with my husband and family. My current age is almost 70. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be really old and decrepit. I was so completely wrong. My best friend would tell you I'm warm and friendly, but people...Expand for more
who don't know me very well would probably describe me as aloof and standoffish. Mainly it's because I'm still a little shy with people I don't know well. I sing in a championship barbershop chorus. We have won our regional competitions many times and have been to many international competitions, placing as high as 6th place once. I still compete with them, and will be going to Hawaii in 2013 to compete for the International championship. My husband is a golfer who has 2 holes-in-one trophies, and my 11-year old granddaughter has had a hole-in-one already! We are very proud of her! She's a bit of a jock, but also loves performing in plays and musicals, like her mother and grandmother! If I had one do-over, I would find a way to finish school young enough to become the teacher I always wanted to be. In 10 years, I hope to be a master knitter. I'm going to get there by continuing to work on my skills. My friend Donna and I have known each other for about 20 years, and we met singing in our chorus. We have sung in many quartets together and have also played our guitars and sung duets. We seem to be able to know the best and worst about each other and still be non-judgmental and nourishing with the other. We also seem to be able to almost anticipate the other person's thoughts and next move. I think my weight would surprise most people at a high school reunion. I was positively skinny when I was in school. I am certainly not now, although I'm working to lose some of my middle-age, sedentary spread! My first job was at Stanford University, where I got paid $200 a month to type mathematical manuscripts full of equations. What I remember most about it is how much I loved doing the work itself, and still do. Alas, I'm a dinosaur in that field with the advent of programs that students and professors can use themselves. I'd love to hear from any of you who would like to correspond. I may not answer right away, but I will eventually.
