Margaret's Story

What is the wildest thing that I ever did in school? Well, I think driving to Americus, GA, with my best friend Judy Brooks the very night I received a shiny new candy-apple red Duster from my parents is about the wildest thing I ever did. I got caught of course. My father was a speedometer checker. He was quite interested in knowing how in the "heck" I managed to have over 300 miles on a brand new car. I know that you guys probably were wilder than I was allowed to be, and my story is actually tame! MY HERO My hero has always been Mr. Tarpley, the best band director on the planet. I was so sad that he passed away last year. He always acted and looked so young, that I was under the false impression that he would live forever. By today's standard he certainly did die young. I ask myself what it was about him that I found heroic. The only answer I have is that during that time in my life, he provided me an emotional outlet. I don't think kids at that time were allowed to have emotions. In my humble opinion, we were much better behaved, as a result, but I wonder about the health of our psyches. Band was also the class where you were appreciated for your talent. I thought I had a lot of it at one time. After majoring in music in college, I was awakened to the fact that I was pretty danged average. However, without Mr. Tarpley's influence, I would never have majored in music and I suppose my college major would have been "Undecided". He helped me to get my first music job, and in later years supported me when I took a band directing job that was insane for anyone to even begin to consider as a means of employment. I'll just end this part of the story by saying that I think I will miss him...Expand for more
forever. Life's biggest surprises... I actually made 3 babies. WOW... if that's not life's biggest surprise. I mean I knew it could happen and all, but I didn't think that I'd ever be lucky enough to have children. My kids are beautiful, smart, kind, and confident. Even if they are hard to get along with from time to time, I'm proud that they are able to speak their minds. I never have had that feeling that I'm an adult. I still feel much like I did when I was 18. I suppose I thought that I'd settle into a rocking chair by this time surrounded by darling grandchildren, but that has not been the case. There actually is fun on the other side of 50. It looks like "Vote for me I'm black," Barak Obama, will be our next president." Would that Colin Powell and/or Condi Rice were running. I'd vote for either of them in a heartbeat. I have learned to like mustard. We didn't have a 35th class reunion. Mike and I are best friends. I still go to 4-H camp in the summer. (Now I'm an adult leader. It's such a BLAST!) MY FAVORITE THING(S) Raindrops and roses and kittens and mittens. Wait...that's someone else's favorite things... I LIKE MUSIC - musicals, bands, big band, and even great big bands...symphony orchestras and rock music. I love Symphonic Metallica, and I hate to admit this but I like Air Supply and ABBA. It killed me when Dan Fogelberg died. I also hate to admit this but I love lots of country music. MY KIDS - Joey, Debbie, and Robby. Kids just don't come any better. MY JOB - Ohhhh it's insane, but NEVER boring! I'm one of six school counselors at Mundy's Mill High School, and I have to say that I NEVER suffer for entertainment. MY PEOPLE - You know who you are :)
