Margaret's Story
(Hallowell Elementary) I moved from the small town of Hallowell, Maine to Seattle, Washington at the end of the 3rd grade Leaving good friends and jumping into the last few weeks of class at a new school (Lowell Elementary) so far from 'home' was both scary and exciting. My oldest Seattle friends remember my 'Maine accent' when I first got there. Over the next years, I went to Meany Jr. High, and Garfield High and became a true 'Seattle-ite'.
LIFE AFTER GARFIELD!
After graduating from Garfield in 1969, I took a year off from school and went to Europe for several months. Then I moved to L.A. in November of that year, and some friends I'd met in Europe and I attempted to form a rock band, writing our own music, and trying to create a new sound. In the spring of 70, feeling pretty frustrated, and not having found a job, I applied for the University of Washington and moved back to Seattle.
Fall of '70, I started at the UW as a nursing major, following in the footsteps of my mother. I kept taking more and more music classes however, and in 1972, changed my major to vocal performance. At some point during my studies, I took almost a year off to go on tour with a couple of my L.A. friends who had formed a new(cover)rock band. While at the U, I met my husband Dennis Van Zandt (Roosevelt class of '69), and we got married in November 1974.
I FINALLY graduated from the UW in 1977 with two bachelor's degrees and over 300 credits!
During my studies, I also won several competitions sponsored by various opera companies including the New York Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Seattle Opera, giving me the motivation to try for an operatic career.
In 1978 I went to Germany to audition for several opera houses, and got a contract ...Expand for more
with the Essen Opera.
We've been living in Essen, Germany since August 1979, where I've had the good fortune to sing over 60 operatic roles in almost 30 different cities. I've also had an extensive concert career, and in addition, I've been singing regularly with the Aalto Jazz Trio since 1999.
My career has taken me to some interesting places including Viet Nam, France, Switzerland, Estonia, Russia(St. Petersburg) and England. In 1988, I went on tour to London and Moscow with Leonard Bernstein. Singing as a soloist under his baton was definitely one of the highlights of my career.
We have two wonderful children. Our son is studying art and our daughter is majoring in mathematics at the Essen University. We also have a sweet (and sometimes a rascal!) five year old grandson. They all live in Essen as well. Our kids have been performing their own music in a band since they were in their early teens. Very talented!!
Dennis works for the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra as an 'Orchesterwart'. He's responsible for making sure everything is set up properly for rehearsals and performances, and that the musicians and conductor have the correct music, etc. In his spare time, he plays soccor and basketball, and sings in a choir .
We have an old cat, 20 years old!
Another of my passions is traveling and learning (or trying to learn) other languages. I'm taking a Spanish class at the moment. (never took it in school) I love my yoga class, too, but don't do it enough!
It's wierd to think we've lived half our lives in Germany. But we still keep a strong contact with friends and family in the States. We keep talking about moving back one of these days (to Seattle, of course!) But when money and time allow, we love visiting Maine as well.
