Margaret's Story
A lot of things have happened in my life since graduation. I was married to Chris Zirpolo for twenty years and we had two amazing children together. Carrie is thirty years old and, four years ago, blessed us with a beautiful granddaughter. Fortunately for us they are living in Victoria where Carrie is in her second year of nursing. Our son, Kiff, is twenty-five and is currently managing the Sport Chek store in the Lougheed Town Mall in Burnaby. In 1975 I obtained my teaching certificate and began teaching in the Victoria school district in 1977. When the kids were younger, I went back to school in the summers and earned my Bachelor of Education. This year, 2011, is my thirty-fifth and final year of teaching. Three years ago I was awarded the Premier's Award for Teaching Excellence. I'll soon be joining all you already-retired folks. A few years after my divorce I married my current husband, Gord and we have now been married for fifteen years. Five years ago I was hospitalized for a rare type of cancer in my colon and discovered it had me...Expand for more
tasticized to my liver and lymph system. I had surgery to remove the mass from my colon but, as it is in several places in my liver, it could not be removed. It is a very slow-growing cancer that has been inactive for the duration. I'm expected to live a long life despite this invasion. This whole episode has made me so much more aware and appreciative of the important things and people in my life. I've been working part time since my return to work so that I can take care of my health. I especially enjoy spending time with my granddaughter, golfing, scrapbooking and crafting. I am also a Math consultant. I've been attending the annual Raisin golf tournament for the last five or so years and really enjoy reconnecting with 'old' classmates. I have some apprehension about entering the next phase of my life as I will miss all the people in my professional life as well as my students and their families. Although it will be a huge change, I'm sure I will be kept busy in many ways and will adjust accordingly. That's my life in a nutshell!
