Margie's Story

Life-According to me-- *Undergrad degree-BS in Accounting and Journalism with a sequence in Public Relations *Grad-MS programs in Secondary Education and Business/Technology Teacher Certification *Visited Brazil as a Fulbright/Hays scholar-Spent time on the Amazon and in the Pantanal-Visited four South American countries while I was there. *Taught technology and business classes on a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico for several years. *Adopted our daughter from South Korea-now in college. *FINALLY, got my first grandchild. My son (and Brooke had a little to do with it) had a son in Oct. 2007-Elijah! *Recently heard a comedian point out that our grandchildren are our rewards for not killing off our own kids. That's really funny, but I now understand why some animals eat their young. *Once had a photograph on display at the Epcot Centre in Orlando, FL, as an international contest merit winner-That was rather significant to me at the time. *Shook hands with one of the last living codetalkers- What an honor! *Once took belly dancing lessons. *Used to take karate. Got to green belt. *Thought I could sing until I tried karaoke-in public. I can't. *Got myself a tattoo for my 50th birthday-That hurt. (The next day I e-mailed a co-worker to tell her about my experience, but when I erroneously keyed in her address, it defaulted to the entire administration! I had commented that I would have rather had a baby because it hurt less and an administrator replied and stated that at least the tattoo would be with me longer than a baby would.) *Always wanted to snow ski-Did that-Decided that I really don't care much for it. (Snowboarding is easier as long as I can keep one foot out.) *My Secret Desire: Always wanted to be a stand-up comedian, but am not good at dealing with rejection. *Great Epiphany No. 1: No matter where I go, I find that all people are more the same than different. *Great Epiphany No .2: I have concluded that I'm not really becoming senile. After so many years of cramming stuff into my brain, I just have to shove old stuff out to make room for new stuff and sometimes the new stuff gets sacrificed in the process! (I would take my Ginkgo Biloba, but I forget where I put it.) *Most difficult question presented to me by my son when he was little: "What are toe knuckles called?" (Still haven't figured that one out!) *Most difficult situation that I had to deal with while my daughter was in grade school: It is when I was called to school by my daughter's first grade teacher because she had hit a classmate for saying that there was no Santa Claus. (Wasn't sure how to deal with that one either!) *Bet I am the only one who honestly used the excuse, "My kid ate my homework." While attending college my daughter got the floppy that contained a whole semester of my projects. She pulled back the protective slide and bit down on the disk. Of course, I didn¿t have backup because I had done it all on the school's computers. *Had my picture taken with Paul Anka in Vegas. I'm bigger than he is. *Also, once had my picture taken with Evan Bayh when I campaigned for County Treasurer. *Saw Santana, live, at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans. *Surprisingly, the coolest concert that I recently attended was a Willie Nelson and John Fogerty concert. Fogerty's drummer is truly awesome! Willie is a legend! *Been married over 36 years-to the same person (2007). *My husband is retiring from GM where he has worked as an electrician troubleshooting the automated equipment for 30 years (2008). *My life's goal: It is to write a book-I will change the names to protect the guilty! (Actually, I've already started it, but am not sure that it will ever get published.) Oh yes, I would also like to learn how to make a scrambled cheese omelet that doesn't look like puke. *Would like to live life on the edge where it is less crowded. *I collect office supplies. Have enough Post-Its to last the rest of my life, even if I live another 50 years. I might have to buy another pen or two because they tend to dry up. *Once was pulled over by a cop for speeding on my way to church to cover a Sunday school class for a friend. When I told the officer that I was on a mission for God, he let me off. True story. (Thank you, Blues Brothers, for the inspiration!) *My favorite online username is PetrifiedFlowerChild. *Didn't realize that I was hot until I was over 50-but, it only comes in flashes. *Actually WANT to get senior citizen discounts-Been trying it for several years-Down side is . . . I've never been carded or even questioned! Reality bites. *Was AARPed in the mail today-YEAH! *STILL trying to figure out why I'm here and what I'm supposed to accomplish. *Like fine dining, but am not sure why the chefs insist on dabbing, drizzling and painting crap all over my plate. . . What do they want me do-lick my plate? Okay, I have no problem with that. *Have eaten Parana, alligator butt, buffalo, elk, mutton, moose and food that nobody would even tell me what it was-It all tasted great! *Don't like to have my picture taken-"They" say that a camera lens adds ten pounds. If that is true, I must have five cameras focused on me at all times! (In HS I couldn't gain weight even if I tried!) *Just learned that carrying a big purse makes your butt look smaller, so I got out my carry-on luggage to use as my purse. That should make my butt look really, really small-right? *Love to travel-anywhere. *Never been on a cruise-Would like to do that one day. *Been whitewater rafting several times-Love it! *Been to Mexico three times. *Been to Canada (Niagara Falls, across the bridge). *Waded in both oceans and the Gulf. *Visited the Trinity bomb site-It i...Expand for more
s open to the public only one day each year-Very thought provoking. *Toured the White House. It is much smaller than I had imagined. *Witnessed the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guards have amazing dedication! *ONE of my favorite ways to spend an hour: A full-body massage, especially after getting out of a hot spring bath! Life doesn't get much better than that! (If it does, please let me know.) *Just realized that I am wearing the same hairstyle as when I graduated-only with fewer strands and I don't "rat" it on purpose now-that's natural. *Once asked a hair stylist to make me look like Meg Ryan. She replied that she couldn't perform miracles. But then, this is the same stylist that I had previously asked when was her baby due not realizing that she had already had it. No wonder my hair is now thinning! *One of the neatest compliments that I ever received was when a friend, and coworker, told me that I was a walking party. She said that every time I show up a pary starts. That's fun. Thanks, Kelly. *Almost forgot-Almost died once and thought I'd write my own obituary so that my husband wouldn't have to-In one version I lied so that I would appear to have been more interesting to all the obit readers out there. *I guess this is my life in a nutshell leaving out a few details here and there . . . and everything is still groovy! School-Moments to remember-- Biggest Regret: That I didn't take education more seriously-I did just enough to get by. Osmosis didn't work out as planned. Remember when: *Adding machines were large and had levers? *We had to use slide rules in math class? *We had only one electric typewriter in typing class? *Black and white televisions were all that we had? *We only got three TV stations? (Come to think of it, there were only three knobs on the TV too.) *We didn't have remotes? (Now I'll spend hours looking for the remote just to turn off the TV. I forget that it can still be done manually.} *We watched Sammy Terry on Saturday nights? *A drive-in movie was the place to go on a date? *A girl in our class went on a date to a drive-in movie and then couldn't get her seat belt unfastened? *Cars did not have seat belts? *A transistor radio was a relative new thing? *Only old women had blue hair? *Girls had big hair? (I miss big hair.) *Only dogs wore spiked collars? *ALL our toys were painted with lead paint? *Nobody we knew had a dishwasher? *Gas was less than $.35 a gallon? *Girls were not allowed to wear slacks or shorts to school? *Hot pants were cool? *Go-go boots were hot? *"Ben Casey" and "Twist" blouses were the desired attire? (Grade school) *Boys were sent home from school if they had sideburns? *Boys' hair could not touch their collars? *Guys didn't wear earrings? *A girl in our class thought a house of ill repute was a home for the "deaf and dumb"? *The smartest girl in our class was caught by police for throwing eggs at cars? (I'm thinking JH was the smartest girl in our class-she and SM were real close.) *Our music teacher would not teach us music anymore because she had inadvertently paired up a "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" for a folk dance and they wouldn't hold hands while the rest of the class thought that was funny? (Orestes) *We actually used the Dewey Decimal System to find library books? *We actually had to learn how to spell (before Spellcheck)? *Boys did not take Home Ec because it was only for girls? (I'm not sure whether boys were even allowed to take that class.) *The upper classmen would go through trash cans and find torn up notes to piece together and then print the "dirt" they found in the "Tiger's Tale"? *We used sign language in class instead of text messaging? I don't think that any of our teachers knew sign language because they never picked up on it. (Jr High) *One of our classmates pretended to lose a contact so that we all would spend our time in math class looking for it when she really didn't even wear contacts? (Jr High) *We had a convocation with a hypnotist who actually hypnotized several of the students? That was cool! *We got out of classes for pep rallies? *Our band was always in the top ten at the state fair? *We went to town for lunch to eat at the Bakery in Jr High? *The Alex Jr High burned down? *The Beatles debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show? *Our teachers cried when JFK was shot? *The entire school gathered in front of one TV to watch the moon landing? *All our tests and study materials were run off on mimeograph machines? Remember that smell? (I would sniff my papers while I took my tests. I liked that smell.) *We watched the girls' coming of age film in grade school? *McDonalds only had one arch? Or, there was only one McDonalds close by-in Anderson? *Hanging around the Norwood Bowling Alley was cool? *There were couples who slow danced to "Wipe Out" at our big Jr High dance? *We actually had sock hops and took our shoes off to dance? *We went to the circus in second grade? (Orestes) *Guys got whippings in the cloak room and would come out smiling like it didn't hurt while the rest of the class sat at their desks and could hear them get whacked? (We actually still called them "cloak rooms".) (Orestes) *We played "fluteafones"? (Grade school) *Bucky Beaver was in the Ipana commercial? *We watched Captain Kangaroo and The Howdy Doody Show? *Girls thought Brute aftershave smelled wonderful? *Hippies were considered revolutionists? (I always wondered where all the hippies went. I found them ALL at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans!) And now . . . for the rest of the story . . . I'm running out of space, so you will have to read the book. I need to go get a life!
