Marian's Story
Life
Retired in Jan. 2001, as Project Mgr/Contracting Ofcr in real estate & construction, after 31 yrs with Feds. (When you are in SIL. SPG., look at SS Metro Center (NOAA)--that was my primary proj.) Worked in private industry early on, then Peace Corps. Spent 8 yrs working for the U.S. Senate Vets Affairs Com. during Vietnam War. Now live w/my Lhasa Apso at 9,000 ft. (325 Mountain Ave. [PO Box 127],Grand Lake, CO 80447,overlooking Shadow Mtn Lake. right next door to the Rocky Mtn Nat'l Pk. Do community volunteer work; on Board of Dir. for CO West Mental Health Services. Picture is of me and my youngest daughter and only grand daughter. My sister, Margaret Lechlider Helms, is a widow living in Buckhannon, WV. working w/disabled. Sister Marlene & hubby Marty Kovacs retired to Vermont. My daughter, Sherry Mertens Oliver, lives just south of CO SPGS and owns a horsetraining facility and is a very successful team penning trainer/competitor. Oliver, my only grandchild, is also an excellent rider. Sherry's father, Jack Mertens, (remember him?) lives in Cortez, CO. His talented musician son Charlie just graduated from Un. of CO. Seldom get back to DC area except to visit my youngest daughter, Tara Laster. She is a patent atty working in the Watergate (right next to the Saudia Arabian Embassy-ugh!) She lives in Northern VA. After our parents died, we sold the house in Colesville. It all seems SO LONG AGO. But, life is good. Enjoy doing stained glass projects and quilting when time permits. Not many people around here in Winter but plenty of social life and bars (lots of beautiful snow). Snow mobiling; also,skiing nearby, as well as snowshoeing). Summer is different. About 60,000 visit over 3-mo. period, enjoying fishing, national park, hiking, camping, boating, repertory theather, etc. Just about finished my lower level. Visitors welcome.
