Marilyn's Story
Life has been quite an adventure for meâ¦much joy, some sorrow, many great moments, a few detoursâ¦one big school of life I canâÂÂt get enough of!
From my first job after high school as a dental assistant, to watching the northern lights in Gillam Manitoba, secretary of the new school there, becoming a professional hockey wife and mother, owning an antique/collectible shop in Sidney, working back at Oak Bay High for Mr Atkinson and the Science Dept, running after a rock and roll singer, my recovery from addiction, going back to UVIC as a mature student, co-founding the Crystal Meth Prevention Society, fostering, being a homestay mum, mentoring youth in recovery, street outreach, consulting, planning practicums for nursing students, and falling in love again, I am enjoying my current semi-retired life as personal assistant, reno designer and contractor with lots of time on my hands. Happy and still a bit of a barefoot hippy, life still has the buzz and exciting vibe I crave everyday.
I have had two incredible kids, Kajsa and Kjell. Kajsa is in the arts and managed Cinematheque Ontario for the Toronto Film Festival, more recently organizing events for the 2010 Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver and managing a literary festival in Calgary. IâÂÂve been fortunate to see many great films, events and performances across the country! She blessed me five years ago with my first and only grandchild, Isla Beatrix, the light of my life! Bright, beautiful, curious and a perfectly mannered scampâ¦I can't wait for her to be old enough take to Paris!

92 in a terrible car accident while on holiday in Alberta, while attending grade eight at Oak Bay High. ThereâÂÂs not a day I don't miss him. He was a justice fighter, musician, computer whiz, poet, comedian, hockey and soccer player.
Through a long extended period of grief and dysfunction, eventually losing everything I held dear, came the eventual opportunity to survive and heal. To recognize the fragile nature of life and the importance of living in the moment; to say what you mean, take responsibility for your actions, live simply and abundantly, authentically and honestly. I am well past the sadness. I am now enjoying a terrific present, blissfully in love the past ten years with Bevin Bigalky, the guy I wished on a star for as a teen, and recently retired as an OBHS art teacher, formerly my sonâÂÂs home room teacher!
Back living in Oak Bay in a funky heritage mansion full of antiques, art and oddities, we are unapologetic pleasure seekers and love entertaining, glamping, organic gardening, our grandkids, surfing the net, travel, the beach, dining out, sunshine, art, cooking, painting, and reading to each other. I still bake and dance in the kitchen, love good wine and food, am a life-long learner, care about hockey, biology, quantum physics, energy work, music, film, bugs, babies, books, teenagers, friends, animals and birds, climate change, politics, people, my family, my spiritual life, and the past few years, protesting with Bev! Meanwhile, with a cranky back, I keep an ice pack handy and look at the bright side! Just go with the flow.
