Mark's Story
Life
Moved from Bridgeport to the other side of the county in '68. Commuted to & graduated from WI in '69, instead of Bristol HS. Tried college after graduation. Withdrew to work in the Show Horse industry. Worked for several of the top trainers in the country. Was associated with numerous World Champions. Moved from northern Illinois to Versailles, KY in '70. Was injured by a horse in '71. Ended up in the hospital. Married my nurse in '72. Father-in-Law worked at Calumet Farm for more than 25 years. Yet wife has no interest in horses. Too bad. Was in & out of the Saddle Horse business 'til '81. Had 2 small children (13 months apart) & wife refused to travel anymore. Hit me hard.
I have been in & around the Food/Restaurant business since HS also. Currently doing concessions at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., since '90. One perk here is getting to see or at least hear some awesome concerts. Also managed some concessions at Keeneland Race Track for 10 yrs. at the same time. Left the Track in '04. I also do Nuisance Wildlife Control, since about '86 (Coons in your attic, skunks under your house, Coyotes killing livestock,etc.).
Daughter has a great husband & 2 wonderful kids. I love them dearly, as long as I can give them back. Lives in resort area of the Smokies, and is in the medical field. Would love to see them more often, but my wife does not like the 4 hr. drive. Son is a skilled tradesman and lives...Expand for more
locally. Will be getting married in the Spring.
Was active in local & area soccer from about '84-'96. President of local youth soccer program (about 600 kids) for 2 yrs. Board member for 5 yrs. Referee at youth, HS, & college level for 11 yrs.
I have met a lot of interesting people and made a lot of friends over the years in concessions business, and surprisingly in the Animal Control business. Co-workers & customers alike. Several years ago I had an elderly couple that owned a t-bred farm on the edge of Lexington that were getting ready to re-roof their turn of the century house, to the tune of about $40,000. One problem. They thought they had a Few 'coons in the attic, and did not want to seal them in with the new roof. They could not believe that I retrieved 16 of them alive from the attic. My fee seemed expensive to them, but not compared to having to repair a new, expensive roof. It is very satisfying to help someone in a situation like that. The farm owners also consider it a good investment to protect their expensive mares and foals from harrassing dogs & coyotes, by using a service such as mine. It can be very satisfying.
It would be great to hear from some of you. Both schools. I'll try to post some pix in the near future.
