Mark's Story

Life Jan 25, 2008 - Well retirement has come and gone (two years ago)and now i'm moving on to the next phase...i'm now a Sr. Maintenance Planner at PATS Aircraft Completions. I plan the maintenance on aircraft coming to our facility. So far i've dealt with the Orlando Magics plane and a couple from Dubai. Anyway it's definitely different from the military stuff...more on that another time! Oh yeah the twins are 15 now and driving me crazy! Jan 2006 - Spent the last 23 years aiming high in the Air Force. I have been stationed in Idaho, New York, Germany, Viginia and now I'm currently living in Dover, Delaware. I started out as a Jet Engine Mechanic, but, changed jobs six years ago and I am now a Flight Engineer on the C-5B Galaxy Aircraft. I have been more places then I can remember and wish I could forget a few too. But, I have to say it has been fun! I have four kids, two of which are twins named Mark and Mindi... Cruel joke I know, but, life is rough and they might as well get used to it now!!! Also, two older kids (not really) that are both in the military too. Matt is in the Navy and Angela is an officer in the Army. I guess that college education came in handy for something. Now I spend as much time as possible riding my Harley, but, it's never enough. Looking forward to retiring here someday soon...looks like Jan. 1st 2006 is the big day! Looking into a few new prospects, we'll see what the future holds. If you're ever in the area give me a yell. Drop me a line. Military Once upon a time time in a land far away...I joined the Air Force on July 20, 1982 pretty much fresh outta High School, went to Lackland AFB, TX for Basic Training, then on to Chanute AFB, IL for my Tech School to be a Jet Engine Mechanic. Finished up there (Dec 82) and was off to wonderful Mountain Home, ID where they told me there was a woman behind every tree! Well there were only two trees! LOL But, I spent four years there honing my skills on F-111A and EF-111A aircraft. Jan 87 I transferred to Griffiss AFB, NY and quickly learned about lake effect snow! Now that's something I will never forget...ever! I was there for seven years and started off in Jet Phase working both B-52G's and KC-135A's. This went on for a little over a year then the two phase docks were split apart and I decided it was time to move to the inshop and see how these things really tick. I spent a little over four years tearing down and building up engines and running engines out at the Test Cell when I could get outta the inshop every once in awhile. I learned a lot the time I spent there, actually made a few changes that were accepted Air Force wide on those engines. During this time we were undergoing a change in our invento...Expand for more
ry. We were getting the B-52H models and the KC-135R models. So along with keeping up the old stuff we had to learn the new stuff too. I actually got to do some internal work on the CFM-56 (the engine on the KC-135R). Soon after this I was on my way out to work on the Flightline...luckily for me I went to work on the Tankers (KC-135R). I spent the rest of my time at the Griff working out there and trying to stay outta trouble. I still remember shoveling snow off the wings of the planes during the winter...and making snowmen on the flightline and doing driveby snowball fights with the other trucks out on the line. Good times! Then my dream assignment came.....I was off to Germany! Oct 93 I was in Ramstein Germany, what a great place. Started out in the Phase Docksfor about a year...are you seeing a pattern here??? Once you have Phase experience you are always sucked in there whenever they can get ahold of you...Anyway spent about a year out in the 512th Fighter Squadron, what a blast! Then the F-16's were being transferred to Aviano Italy. So after some transfer time and some R&R in Italy I went to the inshop. Hung my hat there for almost a year workin the inards and the I went to the Hush House and really got my hands dirty. One of the most fun jobs in maintenance! Well all good things come to an end...Off to Langley AFB, VA in Dec 96. I was barely there a year and was involuntarily crosstrained. Meaning the Air Force said HEY you need to learn a new job, pick from these four jobs. So within a month I was off to begin my training as a Flight Engineer. Started training back in Texas again...damn that place is hot. Then it was back to Va and then off to Oklahoma for some more school, then back to Va. Then it was off to Survival School in Washington State, now there's a memory I won't soon forget...EVER! Afterwards I moved to Dover AFB, DE and was gone within a week back to Oklahoma for 6 months to finish up my schooling. So back in my 67 Mustang I head back to Dover and a year long upgrade to become a certified C-5 Flight Engineer. Since then I have flown all over the world and spent more time in hot ass dirty countries then I care to admit. But, I can't complain because as the Grateful Dead said "what a long strange trip it's been." But, it's been good to me. I have two grown kids both in the military, the oldest boy is in the Navy, a daughter in the Army and 13 year old twins still at home. I've been married and divorced, and just recently retired from the Air Force after 23 1/2 years. And now i'm starting a career in Real Estate. I hope some of you get some enjoyment out of this, I know a few will remember a few of these things. If you're ever in Delaware my door is always open.
