Shortly after graduation from Illinois College of Optometry in 1983, Mark Hennen, O.D. was already being tapped for leadership by the Minnesota Optometric Association (MOA). He was elected to the MOA Board of Directors in 1986, eventually serving as president in 1991. He first served as legislative chair from 1987 to 1994 and was the driving force in passage of the state's therapeutic drug legislation in 1993. Dr. Hennen dedicated numerous hours to the legislative effort. Minnesota stretches 407 miles from the Iowa border to Canada and 360 miles from east to west. Dr. Hennen traveled from his St. Paul home to most all regions of the state, leading by example by contributing to fundraisers and building relationships with legislators. Dr. Hennen was involved at all levels, organizing grassroots, working on bill and testimony language, all while keeping in constant contact with lobbyists and key legislators. The AOA soon recognized Dr. Hennen's expertise and appointed him to the State Government Regulation committee in 1991. He served in that role until his appointment as a member of the AOA Eye Care Benefits Center, where he served from 1994 to 2010. His ability to work with diverse groups and successfully lead earned him the position of Chair of ECBC from 1999-2009. It was during this time that ECBC evolved into The AOA Third Party Center. tometrists. He has served as a representative for AOA with numerous insurance companies, ERISA plans and managed care organizations. Under his leadership, over 50 million Americans previously denied optometric care are able to access medical treatment from optometrists. Dr. Hennen remains active in optometric volunteer work. He has been the MOA Third Party Chair since 2013 and is actively pursuing a resolution to several important issues. He served as the first past president emeritus on the MOA board in 2012, allowing the current board to access the knowledge and expertise of past MOA presidents. Dr. Xuanmai Ta, a classmate of Dr. Hennen, is a Vietnam refugee and has always dreamed of returning to Vietnam and providing eye care to the people of her homeland. He helped organize a team of optometrists, ophthalmologists, and others to travel to a remote area of Vietnam and bring eye care to its people. He has made four trips to Vietnam, bringing Dr. Ta's vision of helping the people of Vietnam to fruition. Dr. Hennen has given back to the optometric community through lectures, taking time out of the office while receiving no honorarium. In addition to several state meetings, he lectured for AOA on third party managed care and health care reform at more than 15 states from 1995 to 2009. His passion for optometry has been displayed to students as well. He has opened his private practice to optometry school preceptorships serving as adjunct faculty to UMSL School of Optometry from 1998-2001 to Salas School of Optometry from 2014 to present. Dr. Hennen's son Matt graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 2016, and his daughter Rachel from MCPHS School of Optometry in 2018. They both are practicing along with their father in South St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Hennen has served his community in many ways, including being an InfantSEE® provider since the program's inception. anks mark
