Mark's Story
After high school I didn't know what I was doing, or what I wanted to do (quelle surprise). Solution: I went back to school :-/. I ran across a friend from high school at that time who was working a coop type job through university. His job was much nicer than my job, so I thought that perhaps I should try this university thing. My philosophy at the time was: "it certainly couldn't hurt". I ended up enrolling at SFU....and four years later I had completed a BA, majoring in Archaeology of all things :-/. I figured out while attending SFU that at the BA level it's not what you learn, but how you learn it that matters. So invest in something interesting, and then enjoy the ride.
I then moved to Ottawa to experience what living in another part of Canada would be like....it didn't take long to become disillusioned with the "centre of the universe mentality" that most central Canadians seem to boast. It also became quite apparent that one needed to learn French if one wanted to survive in that part of Canada....so I did a year of language training at the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi (UQAC)...it didn't help. Subsequent job interviewers in the Ottawa region were telling me that my "accent" wasn't good enough to work in Ottawa (I kid you not). That's when I got the message and then left to return home, all the while wondering how long it will take before Quebec separates from the rest of Canada :-).
I returned to BC and decided that I needed some technical training to boost my career potential...so I enrolled in the BCIT Geographic Information Systems Technology program....and eventually completed an Advanced Diploma through Engineering Technology. This led to immediate employment...and I'm ...Expand for more
still working in that field today.
After this point I got married, had kids, and lived (and worked) in Williams Lake and in Penticton. In about 2000 I thought I would try a slightly different approach to enhance my career potential and enrolled in SFU again, and subsequently completed a postgraduate progam at SFU in Geographic Information Science. Three years later this led to enrolment overseas to have a school in the UK supervise my MSc thesis, which I also successfully completed (through Manchester Metropolitan University).
Regretably, I found myself living and working in Edmonton...but left to live and work in Victoria in 2007. I just couldn't adapt to the Albertan life-style, or climate ;-). The US economy caught up to that job in Victoria, but then found myself back working contract work...in Edmonton again (temporarily this time). Alberta certainly has some nice contract employment opportunities...I wish I could find the same opportunities here in BC :-).
I have had the opportunity to work twice in Washington State on US government contract projects (federal and state) - hurray for NAFTA. These jobs were found when I was in between other work...it was certainly a different experience working as a Canadian in an American environment [whatever you do, don't mention the war :-)].
I certainly miss the milder weather of southcentral/southwestern BC though, but at least the work has been interesting. I can see myself back in BC one day...permanently...we're all like Salmon in a way...we can venture out for a season of travel, but we all seem to want to swim back to our origins eventually.
Anyway...that's about 30-years in a nutshell. Drop me a line if you want to talk in more detail.
