Mark's Story

Hello All, I guess between my two high schools, military assignments, and life ever after, I have quite a bit of ground to cover. I'll try to be brief! I left my Youngstown (Chaney High) friends and classmates in 1981 wondering where I disappeared to and why I didn't show up for our Junior year.... Answer: My mother got remarried over the summmer and we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was bitter-sweet. Culture shock wrapped me pretty tight during '82/'83, but I met some pretty cool friends in ABQ who kept me afloat (thanks gang). Family needs forced me to end my music and athletic pursuits (although I did get to return to play/letter in baseball senior year) and graduated above average but less than stellar. I enrolled at the University of New Mexico. By this time, my mother was drawn back to the Midwest (my sisters were getting married/having kids), so she moved to Indy and I stayed in ABQ on my own (yep, still stubborn to the core). Needless to say I took on too much between full time work and class load, so I decided to enlist in the Air Force before getting my degree. (Hey, I was planning on a military career anyway). Air Force life was very good to me (as my military friends can attest). I served in several high visibility assignments in the D.C. area, got married, and had my first son Chris (1989). I was fortunate to serve at the Pentagon as a Congressional escort/liaison, traveling with Senators, Congressmen and staffs around the world. My wife at the time was also in the Air Force (medic), and during the first Gulf War she deployed....I was tied down to Pentagon duties...relegated to the role of supportive spouse and single parent of an 18-month-old. Although I fared well in my new duties, the end of the war also brought the end of ...Expand for more
the marriage. Life after divorce (1992) brought me back to Ohio (Wright-Patterson AFB). It was good to be a Buckeye again, especially since I had custody of Chris and was now a "permanent" single parent; then I met Sheri. Sheri is awesome and the type of woman no man truly deserves. Shortly after we got married (1996), the Air Force caught up with me and I got tagged for a one year, unaccompanied pleasure tour in South Korea. Since it was an Intelligence assignment it was okay; it was the "unaccompanied" part that was challenging. Anyhow, our persistence was rewarded with an accompanied assignment to Hawaii. The great weather and distractions typical with tropical islands brought Aaron (2000) and Kyle (2003). Life was good...it continues to be. After six years of Aloha, 2005 brought Air Force retirement and a return to Ohio once again. We weren't finished with babies though. Lauren arrived to grace our lives in 2006 (finally got the daughter). Inevitably I did finish my education (well kinda; I'm still working on my Masters) and after securing work as a contractor on Wright-Patterson AFB, I moved on to a civilian analyst position as an Air Force civilian. Sheri works as an HR Analyst in the 88th Civil Engineering Squadron. Chris is now a licensed massage therapist, and doing freelance web design and marketing work. We were blessed with our grandson Judah (2016) and granddaughter Eden (2018). He is still living here in southern Ohio. Aaron graduated in 2019 and is now a sophomore at Lee University in Tennessee. Kyle is a high school senior and Lauren is now a freshman. All continue to do well in school, and we are happy to be close to family, but we do regularly hear a call to return to Hawaii for a "visit at least." We're truly blessed.
