Mark's Story

December 5 2008 Update: I don't know if anyone reads this stuff or not. Sometimes, when notified of a new "hit" on the site, I'll find it difficult to get to a person's story. And, damned few of us put up pictures! I know why, the one I have isn't necessarilly how I want to be known, but, hey, my son's there and that's a good thing. So, Happy Birthday perenially to Lou Ann Stein who doesn't appear to be a member but has a birthday the day after mine. After all those years of being the seat behind me in home rooms, I hope she is doing well. Brief CV: I went to Penn State undergrad and had a bunch of majors. I graduated with a degree in Psychology. Note to parents: Don't let your kids major in psychology unless you also plan to bankroll graduate school. I went to graduate school at Pitt but in Radiation Physics. That's how I got into the nuclear business. I went post-grad to Colorado State and got my PhD in radiation physics. I'm finishing a second PhD in, are you ready, psychology. I am now eligible to license in clinical psychology in California. If you have problems with sub atomic particles or with your emotional well being, call me. There's only a $10 co-pay. For those of you who know my brother Chuck AKA Cam, he's the head of the biology department at Marshall (ya, I remember) and is up for Dean of the college, last I heard. He is a widely regarded (World) expert in microbiology and got his PhD from the University of Maryland. Perhaps the best micro school in the country, not so much in football ( no offense, well maybe a little). For those who knew my sister Mary, she died about 2.5 years ago from breast cancer. She beat the initial diagnosis and fought a good and brave fight. Her aggresive form found its way to other locations. She lived long enough to see her son almost through college. For those who knew my brother Eric, he is a retired pharmacist and current computer guru/technical writer and lives in the Phoenix AZ area. He is recovering from a serious motorcycle accident. Still perhaps the smartest guy I know. OK, that's the update. I have a blog out there but no one reads it either. When I have time, which is rare, I'll add more stuff if anyone cares. San Luis Obispo is really nice. If you are going to be on the ...Expand for more
coast, let me know. It would be good to see some of you. High school, frankly, was not the high point of my life. Having said that, I have some truly amazing memories of many of you and most are very good ones. As I recall, and this may be clouded by age and experience, but Hopewell girls were a good looking lot. The guys, well, uh, the girls were really hot. Have a Merry Christmas all. At least you get snow. We have to go to the mountains for snow but it's only 2 hours away. And, our Santas wear shorts and tee-shirts. Other than that, it's pretty much a normal holiday season. Don't work too hard. Be glad for what you have, and thanks for being the really cool people I once knew. Life My Pets Update 11/19/07 I can't imagine anyone cares, but I have a new wonder cat and my dog recently "lost" her tail. I know how she lost part of it but the other part is still a mystery. My Kids 3 boys, all good kids. My youngest is now at Penn State in nuclear engineering. My middle son is a recording engineer in Los Angeles working on a sound track for a movie right now. My oldest son lives here on the central coast as a computer programmer. My Job I'm the new radiation protection manager here and it is a busy time. We are getting ready for a really large scale job here. It is interesting and frightening at the same time. Other Stuff I resisted joining this site for some time because I really don't think much about the past. But, the good parts of the past are, not surprisingly, tied closely to people. Some of the names I have seen here bring back surprising feelings. To date, none of those feeling have been bad. I'm really curious about how those of us that were together at various points along the way have gotten to where ever it is that we have gotten. We had something in common at some point, and even if it was only geography, it's still something. I sure have had my ups and downs but what a great life this has been. I would expect that there are many more good things coming although I'm finding that it takes less and less to make me happy. Is that growth? Is that wisdom? I don't know but I hope you all feel the same. Here's a collective shout out to everyone who added to the quilt that's been under construction for 54 years now.
