Marlys's Story
Life
Marlys Nelson Grodt-In 1955 I married Dick Grodt, also a SGHS Class of Summer '54 graduate. On January 15, 2009, we celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary.
Our daughter was born in 1960 and our son in 1962. Both are married, and live in Orange County. They each have two children. Karen/Steve have two daughters, 22 and 21. Their Stephanie graduated from Chapman University in OC May 2009. Their Jenny is a college senior. Steve/Bev have a son who's 14 a daughter who's 12. We love being grandparents!
Dick retired in 1990 after a 30 year career in law enforcement at an Orange County police department. I retired in 2003 as a self-employed classification and compensation consultant for public agencies, but still take a project now and then to stay mentally alert and earn additional money for travel or to spoil grandchildren.
I'm into travel planning and geneology on ancestry.com.Not only is it a great hobby but it also keeps me in regular touch with family. Dick plays golf when his back lets him play.
We live in the San Bernardino mountains where we have enjoyed cruising, dining and playing cards with a close circle of friends who all live within 10 minutes of us. We also have a another place in Seal Beach, Orange ...Expand for more
County.
We love to visit with family and friends and travel. We stay in touch with many of our high school friends, and traveled with Bob and Nancy (Allen) Wilson to Hong Kong and China in 2002.
In July 2005 we took an 11-day cruise to Alaska, round trip from Seattle. That November we cruised to Acapulco for 8-days with our mountain friends. Cruising is our favorite form of travel!
In late September 2006 we left New York harbor on a Fall Foliage cruise around the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
In April 2008 we flew to Rio and board the Holland America "Rotterdam" for a 29-day cruise with two other couples. After stopping in three other ports in Brazil, we visited to The Gambia, Senegal, Morocco, The Canary Islands, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Turkey, and the Greek Isles and finally Athens. It was the trip of a lifetime!
This year we took an 11-day Mexican Riviera cruise with the Wilsons.... and another one by ourselves.
Dick and I have both had two cataract surgeries, Dick has had knee replacement surgery and I've had surgery for torn rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders (from lugging breifcases and suitcases and throwing them in oerhead bins in airplanes). But we are both healthy and happy! Life is good!
