Martha's Story
Quick rundown:
After graduating from Newark High, I earned three degrees from Michigan State University: BA humanities, MA reading specialist, Ph.D. educational psychology. While still in grad school I married an attorney, Charlie, and our only child, Amy, was born the next year.,
After I completed the Ph.D. we moved to San Antonio, TX, where he practiced law and I oversaw the Miller Analogies Test program for graduate school admissions. Later I switched to academic life teaching undergraduate psychology.
Since a chronic illness worsened in my mid-forties I have been on total Social Security Disability. In 2001 came Charlie's sudden death from metastatic cancer. The next year Amy graduated from the U of Oklahoma with 2 BAs and moved to L...Expand for more
os Angeles to work as a film and theatre critic. She also earned an MFA in writing at U of Southern Cal. and now contributes reviews to several national publications and is working on her second book.
A few years after Charlie's death, I reunited with Marc, a dear friend from university days. We enjoyed our years together in San Antonio until in 2021 he too passed away from cancer.
I now live with two cats in my suburban house. As health permits, I do volunteer work with parish, faith-based, and civic groups. My parents (Beth Jones, NHS Spanish teacher) retired to El Paso before passing away, and my sister Audrey Beth (NHS '72) lives in San Diego with her husband Dennis.
I have many things to be thankful for and wish all of you the same.
