Martin's Story

3/11/08: I've had an amazing journey since leaving "barbietown" 34 years ago. At least that's what my daughters called Woodmere when they saw it for the first time last summer. Princeton was an extraordinary experience, although I think I was a few years too young to take it in fully. After a fairly quick masters degree in southern california, I stopped trying to fit into the world in which I grew up. High school teaching in Miami in my 20's was my way of taking my love of history, soccer and tennis to adolescents with whom (thanks Ms. Astle) I had a natural gift - and maybe Bout and Joe had a lot to do with it as well. I loved my five years at Palmer School, maybe because it it was one of the best professional fits I have ever enjoyed. Hitting 30 found me thinking about becoming a Headmaster of a private school - but I wound up on a different path. I completed a doctoral program in Boston and Salt Lake and wound up a professor in secondary education. My own personal quest had led me to Utah - and so I taught at BYU and then Utah Valley U throughout my 40's, getting to s...Expand for more
ee most every corner of the West, marrying a local gal, half way done raising three wonderful daughters, but now divorcing. I'm back in NYC because I had to push the reboot button on life in 2007. I teach inner city teachers and am beginning to learn Russian as well. Yeah, life didn't turn out the way I thought. But, I am a wealthy man because of significant friendships from the chapters of my life. And more than anything, I am astounded as to how fantastic the "book" (my life) I am writing is turning out. Because I couldn't have written anything half as interesting if I had tried. I'd love to hear from ex-classmates, ex-students, especially those who understand my quest for decency, civility, virtue and a respect for the world of ideas. borntoinspire at hot mail is me. And with one quick update since I wrote this five years ago, I finally stopped lying to myself after wandering "40 years in the desert", came out in NYC, somehow found the man of my dreams, married Ben, took my teaching on-line (so that I could move anywhere) and chose to make a life here in the Tetons.

This is my mother celebrating her birthday, just three years ago. - healthy and vibrant.  I’ll remember her like this always.
