Mary Alice's Story
I attended Joseph R. Lamar thru 7th. grade.(remember all the kids from the neighborhood walked to and from school together every day and stopped by Mr. Paulk's grocery store for treats). Then attended Tubman Jr. High School from 1956 thru 1959. After I graduated from Richmond Academy in 1961, I went straight to work at First Federal Savings and Loan on Broad Street in Augusta for 8 years and then left First Federal to take a better job at Home Federal Savings and Loan on Broad Street for another 4 years. While at the bank I attended University of Georgia by mail. I married Charles (sonny) Smith right out of high school and when that ended I married my wonderful husband(another Charles Smith, go figure) and have been married for 36 years. We moved to Lexington, South Carolina and have been here since. I taught school for a while at Brookland/Cayce Elementary in West Columbia, S. C. until my husband and I started our own Mortgage and Real Estate business. My brother, Herbert May, had Augusta Appraisal for years and still has an appraisal company in Augusta. ay now, but ironically my sister still lives in the house I grew up in when I went to school(right off Walton Way)and has the same telephone number I always had. So contrary to what they say , I can go home and nothing has changed. I have 3 beautiful children who attended the University of South Carolina (my oldest daughter cheered for them) so we are Gamecock fans and I have 6 grandchildren. I have great memories of Augusta and my friends there and come back every chance I get to stay with my sister. My fondest memories are of the Friday night football games at Richmond, Blueberry Hill up by Aquinas High School (which I think is a subdivision now), Saturday Morning Teen Time at the Imperial Theatre downtown, the Varsity, Green's and Timmermon's Drive-ins, all the drive-in movies, driving down Broad Street one more time before you went home and the rival with North Augusta. It was a great time in life and I truly miss it!
I would love to share with anyone that remembers some of these places and the way Augusta was then. My email is charles_s10 at yahoo dot com. or call at 803-356-0733.
