Mary's Story
Life
Since graduating in 1971, I went into nursing at St Paul's Hospital. I married Manfred Gantner, from high school, the following year. Eventually we moved to Chilliwack in 1979. We had a baby girl, Monica, in 1980. We separated & divorced by '83.
I married Don, who was in the military, Lt Col, Engineers, at the time, in 1983. He had been in Quebec so off to Quebec Monica & I went for 3 years. I loved it there & made many new friends. Then Don retired & we came back to BC in the Okanagan near Vernon. I went back to nursing, as casual, in Vernon Hospital. Don was able to be home with Monica. We moved to Penticton for 3 years then we moved back to Vernon where I got a job in the ICU of Vernon Hospital.
Don bought a number of businesses, 2-way radio & cellular radio shops ..... very busy. We shared our home with 3 M...Expand for more
exican exchange students over the years & one French student which was great for Monica.
Monica graduated & went on to finish her Fine Arts Degree at university. She met & married a young man from Abbotsford & they have just had a baby girl on Dec 11 '06! I was there which made it very special too.
Unfortunately, Don had been diagnosed with leukemia & died in April of '05. We would have been married 22 years. He missed the wedding Aug '05 but gave his full blessing to the couple before. Thus it has been difficult at times, as is normal, & I'm still adjusting to life without him. I inherited the 2-way radio businesses (3) - we'd sold the cellular ones a few years ago. Itkeeps me busy working fulltime, over-seeing the businesses, playing & learning the bagpipes & Scottish country dancing.
