Mary's Story

Life Well, lets see.... I got married the same year I graduated from Poly, had 2 sons then divorced. I remarried had a son and a daughter and divorced him in 1983. So I raised my children by myself and am proud that they have all turned out to be wonderful adults. I am a nurse and have always loved my work. I live in Arkansas and have been here since 1974. It is a great place to live, I have tried not to be too big a hillbilly (ha ha). Now it is 2009 and things have changed since I first posted my story. I have retired from nursing due to rheumatoid arthritis. I stay home now and try to enjoy my life as a "retiree". I have 10 grandchildren now including some step grandbabies. They are all such a joy to me. I still live in Arkansas and love it here. I love to travel and my sisters and I take a lot of trips to different places in the U.S. We really have a lot of fun. My most memorable trip was to Washington D.C. It was a beautiful experience to get to visit Arlington Cemetery. Two of my sons are in law enforcement. Although I worry about them every day I am so proud of the dedication they have to make things right. It is ironic that when I was in high school I wanted to be a police officer when I graduated. I never got to do that but my ex husband is a major for the sheriff's dept. and 2 of my sons are living my dream. One of my best friends in school was Terry Brazelton. She was an adorable, funny, sincere friend. She was such a tiny thing and always made me feel like an amazon even though I was of average height and weight. She passed away 2 days after she turned 34 in 1985 of a brain tumor. I loved her dearly and still miss talking to her on the phone. She will be forever in my heart. I hung around her house so much that I felt like part of the family. I still keep in touch with her mother. Of course one reason I hung around her house is because she had a good looking brother named Michael that I had a huge crush on. Also, my brother, Tom was her first real boyfriend, I think. We tried to keep it all in the family. ha ha I can still hear her laugh, she had the sweetest giggle you ever heard and when she got ...Expand for more
excited she squealed. I heard that lots of times because she loved "The Monkees" and we tried to make it a point to watch it together. I can't hear a song by them on the radio to this day without remembering her and how she squealed as soon as the show started. It was so funny. I also had a dear friend named Paul Powell. I met him when I was 8 years old and we grew up together. His parents were good friends of my parents. I was thrilled when we moved to the valley so I could go to high school with Paul. He was a year ahead of me. We told everyone that he was my brother and for a couple of years a lot of people believed us. When he graduated we finally told the truth. It was fun to be deceitful. I have so many memories of Paul. He taught me how to drive in his '55 Chevy. I was kind of irratic on the gas and brake so he rode with his feet up on the dash bracing himself so I wouldn't throw him through the windshield. Since we didn't have seat belts in all the cars like they do now we had to fend for ourselves. Paul is one of the most cherished people I have had in my life. I love him dearly. He is very successful now and I am so proud of him. The thing that has inspired me to be all I can be is my children. After I divorced and realized that I would be pretty much alone in raising them I decided to go to nursing school which was something I had wanted to do for a long time. I knew I could give them a better life if I got a degree and made more money. My family had to make a lot of adjustments and make some sacrifices while I followed my dream to be a nurse. We had some rough times but I think that it only made us appreciate what we had. They were very supportive. The day I graduated from nursing school and my 4 kids were sitting there looking up at me was one of the happiest days of my life. I felt like I had made them proud the way they had made me proud so many times. I think everything I did in my life was to make their life better. I feel so blessed to have them. I hope everyone that reads this is enjoying their life to the fullest. I hope you all have love in your life and can look back with fond memories.
