Mary's Story
Life
I've been living in Syracuse, NY, since 1985. It gets a bit colder and snowier here, but at least it doesn't flood! Though now that wearing snow boots takes me an extra 2 hours on work days, I could do without the snow. The extra time is required due to the Juxtafit leg wraps and foot wraps I now have to wear every day to control swelling in my lower legs, and also due to the Richie brace I now wear on my right foot to help control adult acquired flat foot that is one result from my long spinal fusion back in 2012. I've been needing the brace ever since I had my right knee replaced in 2019.
I currently work as a Sr Scientist/Computational Linguist for General Dynamics Information Technology. I work part-time now, and work at home on most Fridays and Mondays, and in Rome on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The part-time hours are in part to facilitate my continued participation in the Vitality program, which is a hospital-associated exercise program supervised by 3 exercise physiologists who are always available to provide guidance if needed. I pay for it ($45 a month), but it is well worth the price. I hope to improve my overall fitness level, and avoid any additional surgeries due to osteoarthritis.

ton (hot, humid, rainy, etc.) and over 35 years in Syracuse (cloudy, windy, cold, snowy, rainy, etc.) I have truly come to appreciate the beauty of a nice day. Give me 70 degrees, sunny and a light gentle breeze and I'm in heaven!
In my spare time (yeah, right!) I tend to work on genealogy, which is my major hobby since about 1996. Genealogy also appeals to that puzzle-solving part of me that enjoys working with language and computers.
School
If you had told me back during my high school days that the typing class I took for a year (or was it a semester??) would be the one subject whose knowledge and practice I would then use from that day forward, I would have told you you were crazy!!!!!
College
It's not easy when the teams from your undergraduate institution (UNC-Chapel Hill) and your graduate institution (Syracuse University) play each other in major sporting events (Football, Basketball, Lacrosse). How on earth can you decide who to root for? I guess you can always root for whoever's winning at that moment.....and clap for everybody, no matter which team they're on....
Workplace
At this point, I'm just looking forward to the day I can afford to retire and then become a full-time genealogist, whether professional or just for myself.
