Mary Elaine's Story
I was born in Las Vegas. So were both my parents. They attended Immaculate Conception School too. My mothers parents were both born in Las Vegas in about the 1880s. Both their families owned bakery businesses starting I think back in the 1880s and the both family had been in that business for generations in Europe before immigrating to Las Vegas. My grandfathers name was Henry Monsimer and his family was from France. My Grandmother's maiden name was Elsie Baasch and her family was German.
I had two brothers August (Gus) Zummach and Paul Zummach and a sister Cecelia who attended to IC school. A cousin of my Dad's whose name was Frank Zummach lived with us and was a mechanic at the Chevrolet Garage. My Dad worke...Expand for more
d for the railroad. We had an Aunt Clara Baasch, sister of my grandmother who had a small grocery store on Bridge Street.
We lived on the corner of 11th street and Columbia now a parking lot for the HU campus. We lived with our Grandfather in a big typical Las Vegas type two story Victorian style brick house that my fathers family had lived in since 1903.
My father was a machinist. His father had been a blacksmith. His family owned some of the first cars in Las Vegas and one of the first Auto repair shops. My two older brothers Gus and Paul became mechanics. My grandfather and his brother arrived in Las Vegas in the 1890s. Treatment for tuberculosis and the Colorado gold rush attracted them to the area.
