Mary's Story

Life I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in December 1989 with an associate degree in clinical laboratory science and in December of 1995, I graduated with a bachelor's degree in the same field of study. I'm employed with Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Kentucky where I have worked in their medical laboratory for 18 years. School There were a few fond memories. Freshman Year: Going to the basketball homecoming dance with John K. and him presenting me with a red rose, which I still have by-the-way, pressed in a book. He gave me the rose at the dance. It was supposed to be a surprise, but thanks to the junior varisty cheerleaders not being able to keep a secret, I knew beforehand. Thus, I had to "act" surprised when John gave me the rose. I gave him a hug to the accompaniment of "ahhhs", "ohhhhs" and "that's so sweet". I turned around and there was a group of cheerleaders and their dates watching the whole thing. Quite embarassing! I, also, went to my first prom that year....with a different guy. Oh, high school loves....they come and go! However, I still hold a fondness for all the guys I dated and always will. Sophomore Year: My most fond memory of that year was tutoring Susan E. in Shakespeare. Susan was struggling with it, but the whole time I was helping her, I could tell she knew the subject. She was just putting up a "mental wall". She and I had Mrs. Duggins' Honors English class, second period, and each morning, before class, we would have a cram session. Mrs. Duggins would assign us a section of one of Shakespeare's plays and then give us a quiz over that section. Thus, I would help Susan interpret the section and I would quiz "her" until the time of Mrs. Duggins' quiz. I'm happy to say that Susan made it through Shakespeare and I was very proud of her at the end. I knew it was in her. We just had to break down the wall. Susan, if you should ever read this, "Thanks for the memories!". I had a blast, but I'm sure you didn't. ;) Junior Year: Okay, this year was my worst year! I had problems going on in my personal life and at home, that carried over into my school life. This was really not a good year for me and if they ever invent a time machine, I would go back to this year and fix some things. I wouldn't be able to fix all of it, but some parts of it would, definitely, get fixed! I just shudder when I think about my Junior year! However, there was one bright side. I made All-State Chorus, for the first time that year. I was a nervous wreck, during the auditions, and the judges looked very stoned-faced afterwards. I really didn't have my hopes up. A few days later, Mrs. Terry pulled me into her office and told me that out of the 38 altos that auditioned in our region, I had the highest score (98). It didn't hit me as to what that meant, because the All-State committee could only take a certain percentage of people from each section (alto, soprano, tenor, bass). Mrs. Terry looked me in the eyes and said, "Mary Beth, your score is an automatic entry into All-State!". After I picked my jaw up off of the floor, I was the happiest I had ever been that year. The All-State experience was awesome and I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to sing in such a magnificent choir. The only other "school" memory I have of my Junior year is an embarassing one. It was Christmas and I had a Santa Claus lapel pin that played "Jingle Bells". Well, I'm sitting in Chemistry II class and Mr. Long is giving a lecture. I had to turn away from my desk, in order to see what Mr. Long was writing on the board. Thus, I had my notebooks in my lap. I raised one of the notebooks to my chest, to make more room for my other books. The notebook hit that Santa Cl...Expand for more
aus pin, just right, and in the middle of lecture, we were all entertained by the music of "Jingle Bells". Mr. Long turned around, wondering where the music was coming from, along with my fellow classmates, and I was just trying to find a crack in the floor to melt into. I heard Mr. Long say, "Well, by the look on Mary Beth's face and she is the color of that red notebook, I'd say it's coming from her." Mr. Long and my fellow classmates had a good laugh that day! Senior Year: My fondest memory was the freshman I met that year. My Junior year problems were carrying over into my Senior year, but these freshman helped me through it. They weren't aware of the problems I was dealing with and, to this day, have no idea how their fun loving/friendly attitudes helped me on many occassions. I feel really blessed to have known them and a couple of these friendships still carry on today. Thus, I just want to say, "Thank You", to the following: Teresa M., Kenda B., April K., Yvonne S., Deitre S., Missy T., Michelle T., Carrie T., Cara Beth R. and Beth M.. I received alot of flack from some of my fellow Senior classmates, for hanging around Freshman, but I didn't care. These little Freshman made my Senior year awesome! I was selected for All-State Chorus, for the second time. A girl from E-town High School received the highest score of 99, but I was the second highest at 98. It, still, was an automatic entry into All-State and, again, I had a blast. Wonderful memories! Awesome concert! We performed at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville. This performance hall was better than the one I performed in my Junior year, which was in the Civic Center in Lexington. Much more beautiful and the acoustics were excellent. The "Then" picture, I have posted, was taken the night of the concert. That photo was taken in the Hyatt Regency, right before we left for the Kentucky Center for the Arts building. The concert was in February and we just about froze in our formals, walking to the building. It really wasn't that far of a walk, but with it being so cold, it seemed like it took forever to reach our destination. Another fond memory was the many times I stayed after school for Pep Club, to make buttons, banners and run-throughs for the football and basketball teams. I did this both my Junior and Senior years. There were only about 10 of us who would stay after school for two to three hours, once or twice a week. We had so much fun and Mr. Burd was a hoot to be around. I really do miss him. I wish the best for him, wherever he may be now. Our Senior trip to Kings Island was fun. The most memorable part of that day was Bill N., when he got off of the "White Water Canyon" ride. All I'm going to say is that certain clothing should not be worn, if you are going to participate in a water ride. Nuf said! :) I sung "The Lord's Prayer" at the Baccalaureate service. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be. Actually, I was more nervous auditioning in front of the Senior Committee, than I was the night of the ceremony. I would like to thank the Senior Committee for selecting me. It was a wonderful way to end my high school singing career. Graduation was a sad time for me. I hated leaving behind all of my friends and us all going our separate ways, but that's life! However, I didn't cry until the next day, when I drove past the high school. That is when it really set in......it was over! All-in-all, high school was a blast! It did have its down moments.....like my Junior year <shudder>. However, there were many, many memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who graced me with their friendship. It was an honor and a blessing to have known you! Take care, Mary Beth 11/05/06
